****2 Months Earlier****
"Bella? Bella, sweetheart, can you hear me?"
An unknown male voice sounded far away in my black dream. My black dream. I liked my black dream. I couldn't feel, see, or hear anything, it was just reassuring black. But my black dream wasn't black anymore - there was also a little purple, my black was lightening up. After all this time, my dream was changing. I didn't like it, it hurt. I felt rejected by my own black dream.
"Bella?"
The male voice sounded closer. That was different, too. I could hear. Not only the male voice, but I could also hear footsteps, breathing, and mumbling in the background. I guessed that I was waking up.
I felt some pressure on my hand. I wanted to respond, but I had no control over my body.
"Bella, honey, please wake up. Doctor, I don't get any response from her." The male voice sounded anxious.
There was the pressure again. The male voice was squeezing my hand. I wanted to comfort the voice by responding, but my body failed again. It bothered me. Why was the male voice so anxious? Why couldn't I move my hand just a tiny bit? And most of all, why was there a doctor? I wasn't sick, was I?
There was a light in my black dream, which was growing bigger and bigger by the second. The more light there was, the more I could hear around me.
"Be patient, Mr. Swan, she'll wake up any moment now," another male voice sounded. I guessed he was the doctor the first voice talked to earlier.
I tried to open my eyes, but my eyelids were very so heavy. The first voice said something to the second voice, but it went too fast for me to catch it.
"I don't know Mr. Swan, We'll have to see when she wakes up," was the doctor's response.
What the hell was that all about?
I moved my hand a tiny bit, and I immediately got a response from the man who was holding my hand. Another squeeze, only harder this time, but gentle.
"I felt her hand move! Bella, honey, can you hear me now? Sweetheart, wake up." The first male voice sounded excited, relieved, and happy.
That was a weird. Why would anyone be so happy with me moving? Everyone moves.
I squeezed his hand this time. My black dream was almost gone, and I could hear clearly now. I squinted my eyes and slowly tried to open them. When the light reached my eyes, I immediately shut them again. That hurt! The light was so incredibly bright; it was painful to open my eyes.
I guess someone must have noticed it, because the next thing I heard was someone closing the curtains. I could hear some excited murmurs around me.
What is going on?
"Bella, please squeeze my hand if you can hear me." The doctor took my other hand gently in his, and I squeezed it. I heard a sigh of relief and the doctor spoke again.
"Your eyes are very sensitive to light right now. We have closed the curtains so you can get used to the light. If you want, you can open your eyes again."
He sounded so nice and understanding. I squeezed his hand again and slowly opened my eyes. The doctor released my hand and stepped backwards.
This time my eyes didn't hurt. It took a while for my eyes to adjust. Everything was a blur. I could vaguely see the doctor and the man. Behind them, I saw a girl. I was surprised to see someone else here since I hadn't heard her before.
I blinked a few times and my vision became clearer. The man was around 40 years old and had deep chocolate brown eyes, and short dark hair. He looked very tired, but also very relieved that I was awake, which was kind of odd. The doctor was younger, around 30 I guessed. He was good-looking with bright blue eyes and gold blond hair. Behind them stood a girl; she was about 25 years old. The girl had the same chocolate brown eyes as the man next to me and had long curly brown hair in a loose ponytail. Obviously, she was his daughter. They both never took their eyes off me.
Everyone looked at me. I just looked sheepishly back, not knowing what to say or how to act.
"Bella! Oh thank god you're awake!"
The man released my other hand, threw his arms around my neck and waist, and held me in a tight embrace. He kissed my head. I froze as he held and kissed me.
The girl ran over to the bed and hugged us both. I felt her tears on my face as she kissed my forehead and cheek over and over. I felt very uncomfortable with them hugging and kissing me, but I didn't want to ruin their moment of happiness.
I was happy when the doctor cleared his throat. The man and the girl let go of me, but they stayed very close to my side, both sobbing. The doctor handed over a few tissues and turned his attention to me.
"I'm sorry." He smiled apologetically. "My name is Dr. Greene, how are you feeling, Isabella?"
Isabella? I thought my name was Bella?
He started to examine me while he waited for my answer.
I took a deep breath and cleared my throat. I was afraid it would hurt when I tried to speak.
"I'm feeling ok, I think. I have a little headache though." My voice sounded rough, as if I had been sleeping for a while. But then hadn't I? I didn't know for sure, everything was a little blurry in my head.
"Good, good. I will let the nurse get you some painkillers for your headache. It's because your eyes are very sensitive. You haven't used them in a while." He gave me a friendly smile.
"A while?" I couldn't help but ask. I had no idea how long I was asleep or why I was in a hospital. I felt just fine, except for my headache.
He noticed my confusion and continued.
"Yes, a while..." He looked at the man and the girl for a brief moment before he returned his attention back to me.
"Isabella, what do you remember from the accident?"
Accident? What accident?
"Ehm... I'm not quite sure what you are talking about." I looked over my body to see if I had any damage. I couldn't find anything, apart from the strange looking scar on my hand.
"You don't have to worry, you're okay now. Your were in a serious car accident... a while ago"
Again with the while. I was getting a bit annoyed. Why didn't he just tell me how long ago it was, what happened, and why I couldn't remember it? I looked at the man and the girl; I had no idea why they were in my room. I was sure that I'd never seen them before.
"What do you remember from before the accident?"
"Before the accident? Ehm..." I tried my to remember what I was doing, but my mind was blank.
I must have been doing something, why can't I remember?
"Do you remember anything?"
I tried harder to get a small memory, but I couldn't remember anything. I had no idea what I was doing before. I slowly shook my head as I looked down. I didn't feel comfortable. I started picking my nails, which was one of my bad habits.
"Can you tell me your name?"
I looked up. Dr. Greene's question surprised me.
"Of course I know my name, my name is Bella... right?" Suddenly I wasn't sure of it. They had called me Bella or Isabella, so I guessed that would be right.
"That's right," he smiled again. "And what is your last name?"
"My last name?" I swallowed. I didn't know what to say. I couldn't remember my last name. I tried to come up with it, but no success.
I stared at Dr. Greene. My heart started pounding, and I could hear the blood rushing behind my ears. I started to panic. Why couldn't I remember my stupid last name? Why had my memory abandoned me? I held my breath as Dr. Greene asked me another question.
"Bella, do you know who these people are?"
I looked at the girl and the man, looking for something that I would recognize, but again nothing. I slowly shook my head and faced the doctor again.
"No, I don't know who they are," I said quietly and looked down.
I heard the man gasp and the girl started crying again. I felt the guilt wash through me.
There was a long silence before Dr. Greene spoke again. I knew there was something terribly wrong.
"Bella... that is your father and your sister."
