The clock tower struck it's final dong, signaling high noon. It was time. I took a deep breath and attempted to steady myself. Over my right shoulder I saw small children dancing around and fat ladies trying to get through the crowd. People all around me were yelling at each other just to hear. I took one more deep breath before taking the final step into the sunlight. In the brief second I had before being pulled into the shadows, I wondered if I would go to heaven and see her face again.
BPOV
I tumbled over people and small children on my way to find him. I ran with every ounce of energy I could muster. My knees were shaking and my feet felt like lead weights but I kept moving forward. As the bell rang its final dong, I knew I was too late.
The sun was bright and joyous in the sky, reminding me of my own personal sun, Jacob, as he helped me through these past months. It hung bright and glorious in the sky, but to me it seemed an omen of what was to come. Straight ahead of me children were dancing and fat ladies were trying to get through the crowd. The tower was so close, and I kept moving.
Then, suddenly, a beautiful and dazzling spectrum of rainbow-y light shone straight ahead. The children gasped and the adults stopped to stare in wonder and amazement. I screamed Edward's name and an adrenaline rush sent me bounding over people's heads.
I landed with a thump on the sun-warmed pavement and looked up just in time to see my angel's face for the last time before he was pulled away into the shadowy darkness. And for a brief moment, I wondered if he would go to heaven like Carlisle said.
Just then, my pocket started vibrating. When had I gotten a cell phone? I lifted it out and looked at the caller ID. Alice. I flipped it open and lifted it to my ear, I didn't think my voice worked.
"Bella?" Her voice sounded strained and tight. I felt so sorry for her, losing her brother. "Bella, are you okay?" I couldn't speak, couldn't make any noise whatsoever. I just shook my head from side to side and prayed she could see me from wherever she was.
"Bella, I can't come out there, it's too light out. I need you to go into the shadows. Okay, Bella?" This time I felt my head move up and down, like I was nodding. My body was still on the ground, but I didn't think I had the strength to stand.
My hands went one hand in front of the other, and I was crawling towards the shadows where I had last seen Edward. When I reached the shadows, Alice was already there, waiting. People were staring at me, but I didn't care. I curled up in a ball as the hole in my chest sliced open and swallowed me whole.
