I think it's a good start. It's hard to get a real feel for it with just a journal entry, but I'll stick with it and read more once posted.

You have an interesting idea here. I trust that this first chapter is a prologue of sorts, and later chapters will be longer?
I do want to mention, however, as someone with some experience in proofreading/editing, and as an English major... ampersands (the &) do not belong in prose.
