Author's Response: For sure! Like Bella, I had read parts of Leaves of Grass in high school, but I either didn't remember it or didn't read those parts. I didn't job my memory until after I had already written the outline for the story and chosen the title. Then, once I did reread it, let's just say that it had to go into the story!

Why do I get the feeling that Bella is fighting a losing battle? And why do I get the feeling that it's a good thing?
You should have included something about the reactions of a young lady such as Bella buying Leaves of Grass. Surely that would have been a bit of a scandal. Unless the storekeeper's wife wasn't aware of the nature of the book... But what about Millie?
Anyway, I can't wait to see Bella's reaction when she and Jasper read the book.

Author's Response: Neither Millie nor the storekeeper's wife were familiar with the content of the book. While it was a public scandel in the East, word probably hadn't traveled that far. (Jasper only knew of how racy it was from reading it.) Who could guess why the storekeeper would have ordered such a book.
We'll definitely see Bella's reaction to Leaves of Grass in the next chapter.

Ok, first of all, you need to make these chapters soooo much longer :) I get to the end of each one and i think What?! thats it? I could read so much more of this story, i adore it!

I'm absolutely loving this story. So much, in fact, that I am taking time out of my frantic studying (ahem, procrastinating) for my exam to read it and write a review. The way you're portraying Jasper is lovely, and that little slip of the tongue he had when he was talking about how one can see the view from the kitchen when working in there, when he said "you" and then changed it to "one" was very sweet (though I wasn't sure if it was intentional or just me being a romantic...)

Jasper's age is still a bit of a sticking point for me. I'd love to know the math that worked out that someone who was almost 17 in April 1861 could be 20 in January 1863. Going by those dates, Jazz wouldn't even have been 19 when he was changed.
Ahem, mini-rant over. This chapter was sweet, and yes, I can imagine Jasper's shock that Bella had read Whitman. I only know a few lines from one poem ('Song of Myself" — I am the poet of the body, I am the poet of the soul. I am the poet of the woman the same as the man, and I say it is as great to be a woman as to be a man) but I can remember the moral outrage in Dr Quinn when Sully first read Michaela's copy, so I can understand where Jazz was coming from. Either Bella is definitely a product of her times, or she really has no memory of the content of the work.
And why do I get the feeling that Bella will only be able to think of Jasper as Alice's for so long? And although there is no way to know this given Bella's "dream", I get the feeling that Alice knew all along what was going to happen!
Can't wait to read more!
Author's Response: Feel free to rant about SM's math all you want. I'm right there with you, clearly. Bella doesn't remember Leaves of Grass at all. Just wait until they read it together. Let me just say that she'll be embarrassed. Also, I feel the need to declare my love for Dr. Quinn. If you like Jane Seymour and the concept of time travel, you absolutely MUST watch the movie Somewhere in Time.
