Edward falls in love with Bella from a distance as they share the same route to work.  Bella can't help feeling attracted to Edward as well but, being a bit of a cynic when it comes to love, she dismisses him as an impossible fantasy.  She prefers the comfort and safety of the content, but passionless, relationship she has with Jake.  When Edward and Bella actually meet, however, she considers giving the impossible a chance.
