I liked how Edward could hear what Bella was doing even while he was far away in the ocean. Got to love those vampire senses!
I was confused by this: It sounds like Edward swam far out into the ocean, since the ocean floor was a mile below. But I didn't read that he came back to the shore. Did I miss something? Thanks.
"He pushed himself to the surface in a burst of water and jackknifed into a dive, shooting away from the shoreline until the bottom of the ocean was more than a mile below."

About your question as to whether or not Edward came back to shore, yes, he does. I just don't "show" him doing it, or allude to it. Two paragraphs down from the sentence you reference here begins with with these words: Sometime later--. It's like a seque. :-)
