While it probably would have been easier to keep Carlie in her seat and just unsnapped it from the base before taking her inside, I had gone far too long without holding her in my arms. I knew I would love her, but I didn’t quite realize just how all consuming that love was. It was wonderful.

Edward carried our bag to the house while I carried Carlie, and he opened the door before deactivating the alarm and flipping on the light. 

“Okay, Carlie, welcome ho—” My words died the minute I stepped inside and saw all the balloons and flowers that were scattered throughout the front entry and kitchen, only getting thicker the further we went into the house. “Well,” I told Carlie in that same voice Ali used earlier, “this isn’t always how it looks. I think your grandparents, aunts and uncles may have gotten a little carried away. While we appreciate everything, sometimes they have a tendency to go a little over-board.”

A familiar warmth bloomed within my body as his hands moved over my hips and slipped into the back of my shorts to grip my ass firmly as I rocked against him eagerly.

Needing to take a breath, I pulled my lips from his, smiling and meeting his burning stare as I reached for the hem of my tank top and lifted it over my head. It confused me when I lowered my face back to his and he pulled back slightly.

"What are you—?"

His head shifted to the right slightly and he smirked. "Just making sure there's no knocking at the door ... no phones ringing. It seems we're prone to being interrupted."

Shifting my hips softly, his eyes fluttered and his fingers dug into the flesh of my ass. "It's almost midnight," I said with a light laugh, leaning forward and pulling his earlobe between my teeth before whispering in his ear. "I assure you there will be no further interruptions. Make love to me, Edward. In our bed."

The air was infused with the heavenly scent of my vegetarian dish by the time Edward re-emerged, wearing nothing more than his black flannels and a white t-shirt.

"Just in time," I told him happily, pulling dinner out of the oven. "The bread will take about ten minutes. Would you mind setting the table?"

"Not at all." I soon regretted asking for his assistance when I stood from putting the bread in and felt his body brush up against mine.

Everywhere his skin connected with mine was like a live wire, crackling and sparkling to life. My heart raced and I felt warmth spread all over my body as it flushed. Then, he was gone and putting the plates on the table. He was toying with me; testing my willpower. Well, two could play at that game.

"Is it me, or is it hot in here?" I asked, opening the freezer and grabbing an ice cube from the freezer. It wasn't a total lie; it was warm in here what with the unseasonal warmth outside and the rising temperature from the oven being on.

"Yeah, I guess a litt—"

By the time he turned around, I had started running the ice cube over my neck.

When we were within hearing distance of the other four, we stopped talking about what was going on and I joined Alice and Rose on their cozy little blanket set-up while the guys started the fire. Within fifteen minutes, the fire was roaring and we were all holding hot dog sticks with our veggie dogs over the fire.

“I’ll prepare the buns,” Edward offered.

Before Emmett had a chance to say anything, Alice, Rosalie and I spoke together. “We know, we know; that’s what she said.”

Pushing his bottom lip out, Emmett pouted. “You girls just sucked the fun right out of it.”

I choked on the sip of water I had just taken, holding out the hand that held my bottle and pointed at him. “And that is what he said!” Everyone, including Emmett, roared with laughter.

I quickly shook my head. “No,” I told him adamantly. “He’s not. Edward, we just made a huge breakthrough in our relationship and I’m not going to risk taking four giant leaps back over something like running away.”

“Bella, I know I can trust you,” he whispered softly.

With a laugh, I shrugged, moving forward to straddle him. "I don't know," I said, settling onto his lap and feeling him grow aroused beneath me. "I thought it was perfect. Anyone can propose in a crowded restaurant or on vacation in one of the more romantic cities in the world... This though? To me, when a person proposes, they're always at their most vulnerable. I mean, you never really know what the person's answer will be, so there's always a little bit of fear there. It doesn't get more raw than that... Add to that being naked and..."

A shiver moved through me as Edward's hands moved down my back and cupped my **. "I just think you like seeing me naked, Swan."

"Well," I rasped, my voice full of lust as Edward pulled me against him, causing my desire to spike. "I'm not going to lie; it definitely has its perks."

Unable to take it any longer, I pressed my lips to his and kissed him hungrily. As my hips moved forward slightly, settling onto his lap, he groaned into my mouth and his fingers dug into the soft flesh of my backside as he tried to slow down my expeditious actions.

"Make love to me, Edward," I murmured against his lips, opening my eyes to meet his intense stare as I lifted my hips slightly and aligned us to join.

When the bucket was full I turned the water off, picked it up and turned to leave the wash stall, only to be startled when I found James standing there watching me. The bucket was back on the floor, tipped on its side and soaking the concrete and my shoes, leaving me cold, wet and severely pissed off.

“What the hell are you doing here?” I demanded, righting the bucket so I could fill it again.

“It’s good to see you again too, Bella,” he said, probably trying to sound more playful than creepy. “You know, you could have gotten me in a lot of trouble.”

Laughing dryly, I shook my head and looked down at the water still flowing from the hose, unable to hold his menacing stare. “You can’t be serious?” When he didn’t say anything, I knew he was. Not wanting to get into it with him, I sighed. “What do you want, James? I’m trying to finish up here before locking up for the night.”

“Well, I was here to ask your dad about something but couldn’t find him.” He took a step into the wash stall and I grew a little nervous; it was almost like he was cornering me. My panic only seemed to rise when his eyes moved up and down my body as he took another step and licked his lips. “Maybe you could help me out instead?”

I couldn't believe it—no, actually I could, because every time something was going unbelievably right for Edward and me, something had to show up and bring us down. 

Enter the ice queen herself, Kate. 

As she continued to blatantly stare at my stomach, I felt uneasy and placed my hand over it. Clearly, my hand passing through her line of sight snapped her back to the situation we found ourselves in, and she shook her head before glancing up at Edward. 

"What are you doing in Washington?" he asked rudely. 

Kate seemed upset by his venomous tone, blinking a few times in disbelief before gathering her bitchy composure. "I'm here on business. Ever since you left Daddy's company high and dry, someone has to do the travelling—" 

"And I'm sure you just jumped at the opportunity to fly out west when it presented itself," I sniped, drawing her attention back to me. 

Her lips twisted up into a smirk as she huffed lightly. "You know, I wondered how you'd trap him. Didn't take you very long, did it?" 

"Excuse me?" I ground out through clenched teeth, my hand falling from my belly and clenching into a fist at my side as I tried to keep myself from lunging and tearing her limb from limb. 

Looking up at Edward she arched an eyebrow and tilted her head in my direction. "You even sure it's yours?"
