Updated November, 2009

This story is now COMPLETE!

Dark Side of the Moon is my version of New Moon from Edward’s point of view.  Witness how Edward agonized over leaving Bella, hunted for Victoria, faced the Volturi, and came to realize that with Bella was where he was meant to be.

This tormented story has been a part of my life for about a year and a half – and what a ride it’s been!  Meant to be canon and in character, I hope you enjoy angsty Edward and his suffering during New Moon.  As unhappy as Bella was during this time, Edward suffered so much more (I think).  So be sure and crack open a fresh box of tissues before reading!

Thank you to everyone for all the reviews, especially to those of you who reviewed each and every chapter!  Your support and loyalty have been the driving force to me getting this project finished – and I hope it’s lived up to all of your expectations.

Love you all,

blondieakarobin

PS.  As one last thank you, I’ve posted a formatted, printable copy of Dark Side of the Moon at http://bit.ly/2vLHMi, as will also post as an electronic version suitable for viewing on a kindle or MobiReader.  I’m also posting a ‘Director’s Cut’ that includes citations of all of Bella’s quotes from Twilight, research notes, and even funny comments from my betas in this version in the same directory.

This really struck home for me- it explains the devastated look on his face and shows just how little Bella trusts in the future.

Correct Banner

What if in the beginning Edward lied to everyone about being in love with Bella? What if originally it actually was all about Bella's scent? And what would happen then if accidentally, much against his will, Edward kind of sort of fell head over heels in love with this not-so-dull human girl?

This is an AU of the Twilight Saga using an entirely different plot as to how, why, and when Edward and Bella fell in love. It offers a different explanation for what was so special about Bella Swan, why Edward vigilantly enforced those physical boundaries, why there's tension between the Cullens and the wolves, and why Edward behaved the way he did not only with Bella but with his family. Expect romance, mystery, angst, and humor. Dark Edward.

Loved the interactions with Marcus. I do hope the haircut isn't too severe, though I suppose his wolfpire stubble-growing may lead to some top of the head growth as well.

You captured Edward's disorientation well, and I loved Bella's reaction.

Re: snarky summary- Edward better protect those nuts, Bella will have a use for them eventually!

Author's Response:

Hi there squarepancake!

Thanks so much for the review! Marcus is so much fun. And Edward's hair is growing at the rate of human hair, so I could have shaved it to the skull and he would be fine. They gave him a close cropped but not buzzcut hair cut in my mind due to that whole pitch being stuck in his matted mane business.

If you go to the thread you'll see her original reaction that I edited out. Fantasy Mother said so. :)

Totally agree with you on the nut issue. :) Right now she values Douglas' more than Edward's.

So I already reviewed this, but something popped into my head- I feel as though Edward refusing to communicate with Bella's family is going to come back and bite him on his stony ass. They clearly have more info, and Liam is a delightfully mad genius.

Author's Response:

Hi there squarepancake!

You may have a point. The section I would refer you to re-read is the last conversation that Emmett and Edward had with Genevieve in the end of part 18 and the beginning of part 19. Her using Bella's body was clearly harming her. Then there was that whole Violet Gorgon hijacked her dealio - so Edward felt he had to cut everyone off or she could die and God only knows what could happen if the Gorgon came back. She might not leave. Which would really be bad for Edward. Inconvenient, too. So Edward is in what I joking call a suck-suck situation. No matter what he does, his options suck. And Liam is a mad genius. He says for me to tell you "thank you."

Laurent juxtaposed with the sisters' names- fantastic. Also, a fight between the newborns and the skanky trio should be fantastic. I like your portrayal of Paula. After so many years of abuse she's getting her own back. I am curious how Jacob winds up phasing since he is depicted as a werewolf before the wedding. I'd blame Billy, but I don't think he has the brains for it.

Author's Response:

Hi there squarepancake!

I thought the idea of getting the newborns in the same room as Tanya and her sisters would be entertaining. So of course I had to go there. They must be put in their place. I'm glad you like Paula. To me she's a mixture of cold-blooded - not telling Charlie she had his child - or was pregnant with another - dealing with her brother handily for years while trying to keep Charlie alive and Jacob emotionally in one piece - and suffering at being separated from her son but never letting anyone have a clue.

I can't tell you how Jacob becomes a wolf. I CAN tell you that Billy has absolutely nothing to do with it. You're right he's not that smart.

Thanks so much for the review! Best, Books

I wonder if reading Ben's mind and getting "advice" through him would be easier for Edward to accept than direct advice from his family? At least then he can put the veneer of insight on his actions. I am glad that he was worried enough to try to get some insight from Genevieve, useless though it was.

I'm impressed with the way Tanya and the Denalis were kept from Bella. I was trying to anticipate how they would be kept separated, and Carlisle's intervention to protect them was entirely unexpected.

Edward's sharing of almonds with the squirrel was oddly sweet. And pathetic. Poor confused, emotionally/venomously scarred boy.

Eric's reaction to the lust wave was hilarious. As was Jugurtha's ogling.

Author's Response:

Hi there squarepancake!

I have vivid memories of being in high school and having my sister offer me advice on a problem. Then I'd come home from school and say, "Hey guess what my friend so and so said to do....and I'd be enchanted with the exact same suggestion my sister had offered." How she refrained from beating me senseless I have no idea. That's kind of what I was going for with Edward. He blows off his family initially thinking, "They don't know her like I do." So his family decides he's going to have to figure this one out on his own, not so much to punish him as to help him do some growing up and stop treating him like a 17 year old.

I thought having him see who came knocking at the door was risky. And you're right on target, I used it to show just how desperate he was.

I'm glad you like what I did with Tanya. Initially when I wrote the scene I had Tanya come to the cafeteria, and not look over at Edward's table, keeping her back to them the entire time. And to me, that didn't seem very much in line with Tanya's nature. She'd be dying to look at Bella. So to me, the Cullens have a very real problem. They need the Denali clan's help to protect Bella. But if they show them her scars (Edward can hide his if necessary from them), they put them in a horrible position with the Volturi. Carlisle had kept his family in the dark about his contact with the lost covens for the very same reason. And I also wanted to show Carlisle taking a more assertive leadership role in the family, rather than be there to dispense advice from time to time.

I had so much fun with the squirrel scene. I wanted to continue to show the odd symptoms that accompany the wolf powers - Edward can commune with some animals. Edward at the beginning of the HOD arc would never have thought twice about leaving almonds for a hungry squirrel. He'd have considered eating the squirrel perhaps.

I wanted to pick up where Charlie had left off and show another version of someone chanting about his/her sexual identity in the face of Cullenary power. Jasper's gift is that he makes you feel HIS lust. Not your own. And since he's heterosexual, anyone who is not would be highly disturbed.

I have lots of fun making Jugurtha alternate between being this pleasure seeking/hunter with no moral qualms (perhaps practical ones) about his behavior - and having him be the one to give Edward a sense of discipline with his scheduling. :)

As ever, thanks so much for the review and your support of the story.

Warning: I may have made the decision to drink and write. Maybe. You probably shouldn't respond to whatever I wind up writing.

I loved the sacrifice he's supposed to make, gets me all excited about foreshadowing and other literary devices.

Tanya's not really easy to put off. Edward was getting all down with murder and mayhem in front of her and ruining her image of him, but she still wants to seduce him later. Still loving the newborns.

Thank you for the summaries- honestly the writing has so much detail that I worry sometimes that I'll miss things. Will it matter later that there was a Kenyan vampire? Will African vampires have some special culture that sets them up for a war with the Volturi? Will Edward continue to leave almonds for Douglas even after he leaves? If not, will Douglas go on an epic journey to find new food sources and wind up prey to Jacob who is now a werewolf.

Author's Response:

Hi there squarepancake!

I always respond to every review, no matter how drunk you are. Thanks for writing it. :) Now have another drink for me, ok?

If you liked that device, you'll be in heaven next chapter. *evil grin*

Tanya's problem is that for her Edward is an afterthought. She doesn't love him. She sees him as someone she has to "conquer" because he is the only man in her existence who has ever spurned her attention. And he's been so awfully polite about it. Formal, too. In this section of the story she really thinks that he's simply driven by his instincts, that's it. In the front arc of the story, at least to me, she's in denial. (pardon the Denali pun). I have had so much fun with the newborns that of couse, I'll use them as often as I can.

As for the details, I never put something in that I don't intend to address in some way at some point. That's about all I can say.

Douglas is lifting an almond in your honor!

Edward's reaction to what his siblings think of as his first human killing must be confusing the hell out them. Even though they were serial killers, they were human, and with Carlisle's teaching it would seem strange that Edward was still relatively collected after all this.
I feel bad for Sam, surprisingly. He lost his child, seriously hurt the woman he loved, and killed his creepy imprintee. Well, imprinting is creepy. Emily doesn't get creepy until she actually agrees and marries Sam.

Bella and Edward's communication skills are improving though. She managed to articulate why she's upset. I hope that in isolation they will keep talking.

Author's Response:

Hi there squarepancake!

Thanks so much for the review! And the stars! You made my night! You are also dead on accurate about Edward and his siblings. I wanted to show him not having much of a reaction because frankly, he lost his temper and he's having trouble multi-tasking because of the toll the powers have been taking on him. Emotionally he simply lost it with the serial killers. And Mr. Always have to have a Plan and rehearse his conversations around his family - simply went off script. It will most definitely occur to him that he has a problem in that area. Later. :)

I had him "show" his family what he picked up from the minds of the serial killers so that they could understand why he behaved the way that he did. That buys him some time. But he most definitely is in for a talking to not only by Carlisle but by the other members of his family who think he's never killed anyone before. Awkward.

I am glad that you felt sympathetic for Sam, as I had hoped to show that he was every bit as much of a victim as the others. I had someone I knew years ago who fell asleep behind the wheel of his truck late one night driving back from a camping trip. He crashed. He and his girlfriend went through the front windshield. The truck flipped and killed his 17 year old sister and her fiance. And I could not begin to imagine what that felt like. I tried to capture that with Sam. Different circumstance, mind you, but that is what I was aiming for. And totally agree with you on the imprinting is creepy part.

It always irked me that Emily agreed to marry him in the books. She said she didn't love him. She said she didn't want him, he mauled half her face off for crying out loud, and she's like a sister to Leah who does love Sam. I couldn't get over the "betrayal" factor.

Bella has indeed articulated why she was upset. And that took a lot for her to go there. Blind panic, for example. :)

Glad you enjoyed the interaction between those two, I had fun writing it.

Loved the internal accusation that the spirits were jealous of Edward's... let's go with finesse... with the emotional powers.

But the most interesting aspect for me is the Annie/Victoria situation. Bella is in love with Edward, Bella gets turned, Bella's love is insufficient if they are not actually mates in the vampire sense. Is mating always mutual? Edward could think they were mates, but it might only be human-based love.

Author's Response:

Hi there squarepancake!

You, my dear, raise an interesting point. Not that I'm going to answer it in regards to future plot points. :) Yet. Take Liam and Eve. Together 40 years. Along comes Eve's mate and bam - she can't stay away from him. Yet she still loves Liam. Liam took himself out of the equation literally within days. So one never knows what would have happened had she "fought" against the mating bond, because in my mind, there is no such thing as one-way mating-bond. I'm not a fan of imprinting (obviously) and I'm not trying to set up that dynamic with Eve. She truly is happy with her mate. And she is pissed as all get out that Liam died the way that he did. Then you have Jasper who dated Maria for decades and they never mated. Then you have Jasper who truly with all his heart loves Annie his wife - and abandoned her to protect her and his family - so he thought. From my mind, Annie truly loves her husband and has shown that dedication every day for over 100 years looking for him. When she shows up, he handles the situation poorly and in public and doesn't even offer the poor woman privacy to hear such horrible news. So yes, I think in this case you could make the argument that human love cannot compare to vampire love. I do see an area for wiggle room in Jasper's case. To me, he never "mated" with Maria because he was with her to protect his wife, as sick as that sounds. He wasn't open to the idea.

In my mind no one was really thinking because they were all stunned. And Annie got a raw deal. Jasper remembers his love for her. He doesn't love her any less. It's just that his mate bond with Alice is a true one formed over 50 years. And when he made it, he truly thought he had his heart to give, which makes his guilt all that much more. It kind of sucks to be Jasper, Annie, and Alice right now.

I wanted to make Annie sympathetic. I wanted people to understand why she does what she does.

Hope all that babbling made sense. Thanks for making me think, as ever,

Bella could b related to Alice, Jane and Alec without being related to Edward. Maybe that’s why Alice can sorta smell her. I wonder if Jane and Alec, knowing they were related to Edward, just assumed Bella was from that lineage as well.

I’m glad the Cullens had a damn good reason for being away from Bella. Fighting for your life against Phoenix’s army would be a bit of a distraction.

Love this line: “She should not be frightened; therefore, I was going to have to kill more vampires.”

I love that Jane and Alec aged. I would be pissy too if I were stuck forever at age 13.

Yay Marcus! For so many reasons.

Author's Response:

Hi there squarepancake!

Thanks so much for the feedback! You are right that Bella could be related to Alice, Jane and Alec without being related to Edward. Alice can kind of sort of smell Bella because they are distantly related. Jane and Alec are so busy trying to preserve their immortal bad images that they are grabbing onto any explanation that works.

The Cullens did indeed have a really good reason for being away from Bella. Also, Mary Alice never told them that Edward dumped Bella because she didn't know if in fact, he did. And the Cullens have been under the impression that Edward has been in Forks all along. They have no idea he broke up with Bella. Or what happened to him. They only know he's in really bad shape. And they were trying to question him on the sly in the last chapter without him being aware of it.

Glad you like Marcus. I plan on having loads of fun with him in future chapters. :)

This was so much more intense than the empty pages of Edward's absence in New Moon. Jesus.

This line: "They had taken Bella Cullen from me." Even though she gave him back the ring, now that he's realized what he's lost, he thinks of her in a forever-familial sense.

I take it Alice sees that once Bella is turned they truly are mates in the vampire sense? Wouldn't that destroy Edward's Liam's fears?

And it looks like the Cullens never returned to Forks, not just Edward? Poor Bella.

Author's Response:

Hi there squarepancake!

Thanks so much! And those empty pages really were a good device, weren't they? See the thing about Edward is that his brain always when it comes to Bella thinks too fast. He was thinking of her as his bride before he even asked her out. So now he's livid because he's blaming "others" for having taken his wife from him.....kinda, sorta, trying to push away even for a second his role in it.

The thing about Alice's visions is that they have not been accurate lately due to that whole wolf power dealio. And they also depend on all those pesky individual decisions falling into place - so they can change. So Edward has questioned them - with good reason - because she often didn't see things when she should have in his mind. And because he's in such a deep delusion it is easy for him to excuse away that Alice saw him and Bella together and happy when it suits him. He used that Future Vision as an impetus earlier - then used it to self-mortify when he saw the vision of her and the cliff. Edward has always been his own worst enemy when it comes to his fears. No one really needs to scare him - he does a great job of that all on his own through using his own twisted logic. Hope that made sense.

I always thought that they way Alice's powers were conceptualized in the book didn't really make much sense. To me if her visions turned on every time someone she loved made a choice that could impact his or her future, she'd be the equivalent of the oracle of Delphi sitting there drooling. I also didn't want to make her as omniscient and controlling as she came across in the books.

The Cullens were not in Forks during Edward's absence. You'll find out more about that later. I do want to emphasize that if you are thinking NM on that issue --don't. They did not abandon her. They did not "choose" Edward over her. Only Alice knew he was thinking about breaking up when they left and she kept her mouth shut. They did not stay away for Bella's welfare.

Again, thanks so much for your kind words about my story. :)

Best,

Loved this line: "Nothing says, ‘I care,' in Jasper Whitlock's mind than slaughtering your supernatural nemesis for you. Like a vampire Hallmark, his plan made him feel like the protective big brother."

Interesting that the vampires think the Gorgon can cause immaculate conception. Bella as a female Christ figure?

"And what reasonable vampire hung out with childhood kidnappers for a millennium?" I love the idea that Edward of all people is judging reasonableness.

I sorta feel like Marcus is the basis for Mars.

I could have done without the Alec manly bits visual.

" He pointed at the vampire world's equivalent of the Golden Arches. Aside from Tanya, that is. Who knows how many had passed through those doors? Never mind." Ewwww, haha, ewww.

I like the image of Aro as an eccentric painter.

Only 14 lesbians? At least Bella would have a selection.

Bella Atilia? Love it!

Grendel and Medusa's child, grandchild of Medea and Mars. I'm liking Bella's lineage.

Author's Response:

Oh Squarepancake!

I live for your reviews and your biting wit. *sniffs away a venom tear* I love it when snark is appreciated. :) You sincerely made my day. I am most definitely not attempting to portray Bella as a Christ figure, but I can see how that interpretation could be made and it's a valid point. I was having Edward basically read minds and once again decide he is surrounded by morons.

I had to throw in the reasonable vampire line because he uses it so often to justify his own behavior when he is a stalker. And he's made these little digs at Vivinna all along like "what mother misplaces her children? for centuries?" So I was trying to continue on in that vein.

Marcus is supposed to make Jasper look like a ninny in terms of awesomeness. He willingly kept himself away from his mate, knowing how much they both would suffer, in order to reach a goal they both wanted. Now THAT is endurance.

I had to throw in the doorknob line to show that in the characterizations of SSE and Jugurtha being a little off that Edward is still not quite normal. And I compared Tanya to fast food in a previous chapter.

I am having fun with my characterization of Aro. I see him a quirky, creepy, avaricious, and sincere all at the same time.

Bella would indeed have a selection. I forgot to mention the bi-sexual and transgendered vampires, which was a mistake on my part.

Atilia is a name from that time period that was given to women and I loved the idea of someone naming their child something that clashes with the surrounding culture. I had a friend who when his wife was pregnant insisted if they had a son, they were naming him Montezuma. We had to explain the concept of Montezuma's revenge to him. He was displeased.

I'm having way too much fun with answering the why is Bella Swan so special part of this story.

Thanks so much for reviewing and bringing a smile to my face. :)

So I'm loving the vampire clans, but I'm also really looking forward to Bella returning to the land of the living and giving Edward what-for.

If I were the Quileute spirits, I'd be slightly freaked out by seeing all the vampire culture. I mean the wolves generally encountered lone nomads, and later the peaceful Cullens. Now the spirits are watching legions get down and dirty with grudges that stretch millennium.

Jasper's reaction to Marcus is awesome. Exactly how I would expect it.

Author's Response:

Hi there squarepancake!

Thanks so much for the review! Bella will not wake up till they get to Forks. I don't want you to feel jerked around by that aspect of the way I've split the chapters. She'll be catatonic 24 hours.

And I totally agree with you on the Quileute spirits. They have a lot of irons in the fire. And they are in a way forever tied to Edward, so when he calls they answer. They don't always say yes.

I am having so much fun with Jasper and Marcus. I'm glad you are enjoying that. I haven't even begun to have my wicked way with Marcus. And just so you know. Here's who I have in mind when I think of Marcus:

Just a short review this time, I'm afraid:

So Bella's clumsiness will continue in her vampire life unless improved speed and strength are enough to off set it. Arria is a total failure as a bio-mom. I get the feeling that she's repressed all humanity. It makes me want to go back to the start of the story and see if I see any signs of Bella's extended family.

Author's Response:

Hi there squarepancake!

I'm happy for any feedback, m'dear! Thanks so much for leaving a review. The improved speed and strength were only off shoots of that bracelet. So she won't keep those. In my mind I thought that SM cheated in BD by making Bella oh so graceful since she went out of her way to point out how clumsy by nature Bella was. She never blamed it on an accident. So I felt like Bella should have been the clumsiest vampire ever. And in CC, her clumsiness is the result of an old brain injury and I don't see the turning process as one that would "fix" that and make it perfect.

Arria is a failure if you use a 2010 yardstick to judge her yeah. You don't know her full story though. If you look at things from her perspective and the historical notions of parenting - I don't think she can be blamed for following her own culture. Arria has limited interaction with the outside world and doesn't really deign to notice much about humans. She was raised by soldiers and punished if she was "soft". She genuinely does love her daughter and feels protective of her. If Arria had her say, the immortal world would never know about Bella - her Mom overruled that in order to dangle Bella before them like a bauble. And Arria is absolutely livid at finding out that Edward and Bella are kind of sort of mated although not for the reasons you might suspect. She knows that Edward broke her daughter's heart. She also knows that  Bella will suffer being away from Edward, but likewise will suffer by being around the guy too. So Arria is all kinds of deeply unhappy.

I don't think you'll find enough in there to point you to the existence of a family in the first arc (this one that is). I left them out deliberately.

Poor Alice.  I find the motivation to not just protect her family but also to demonstrate that their strengths can be used compelling.

The List by Laura Cullen Rated: NC-17 starstarstarstarstar [Reviews - 13646]
Summary:

Four weeks before her wedding to Edward, Bella is frustrated. She knows there's little-to-no chance of getting him to bend his rules and boundaries now, but there's no harm in fantasizing about what could happen later. So she begins compiling a list of things that she and Edward can do together once they're happily married. She's surprised to find she might be able to cross some things off earlier than she thought...

Story contains mature themes and is not intended for younger readers.
