This story took me surprise. The notion of Edward having an illegitimate child from his human life, and what might be done with such a premise, sounded dreadful, to be honest. I'm glad I gave it a chance, though, because you've created an engaging, thoughtful tale with so much to offer.

Thank you.

I'm glad you gave it a chance too.  I think a lot of people are put off by the idea of Edward having been with someone else and don't persevere - I'm glad you did.  Thanks for your feedback, it's very much appreciated  :)

Very well-done all around! I love your characterization of Aro.

And at risk of sounding impatient, thank you for skipping a bunch of filler about Bella's time in Florida.

And please don't apologize for the length. I'd rather wait a while for a chapter this size than get the usual shorter chapter.

Bravo!

I'm really loving this story. It's engaging, intriguing, and the moody atmosphere is effectively accomplished without embellishments. Exceptional characters and such highly intelligent dialogue... it's all here with bells on.

I'm especially enjoying the artful way Church and the "mystery" man talk about themselves with Bella, and am really curious to see how the relationships develop.

Also, when Church talks about the past, you manage to give him the voice of a true contemporary of the early 20th century, and I'm not referring to diction (although you handle that remarkably well, also). No, I'm talking about a much rarer thing- Church talks about the past without sounding like he's reading from a history book. He speaks as someone who was there, not bothering to inject a lot of period details into his narrative- a trap a lot of authors unfortunately fall into (including myself).

I mean, if you tell your future grandchildren about an eventful camping trip you take with the Cullens in 2010, are you going to say...

"Well, as I drove my Ford hybrid up to meet everyone at the campsite, my cell phone rang (cell towers had finally gone up in the national forest two years previous). My ringtone was that 2009's hit song from the Kings of Leon. It was Alice, and she warned me about a trooper up ahead that was going to see me on the phone and give me a ticket, since talking on a handheld phone while driving had been outlawed in 2008...?"

Probably not. You'd likely say, "Alice called me while I was driving to the campsite, warning me about a trooper up ahead that was going to ticket me for talking on a handheld while driving. Just as I was about to ask her why she'd fulfilled her own prophecy by calling me, the other line beeped. It was Jacob."

'Nuff of that. ;D Anyways- he speaks of the past naturally. Very cool.

I look forward to future chapters.

I have read a lot of fanfic, and while a few have truly touched me, none actually brought tears to my eyes. Not even the original SM series ever made me cry, come to think of it. But I just got through shedding tears as Carlisle passed away, dang you.

I'm now looking forward to reading Waning Moon in its entirety. I, too, have long been convinced that Carlisle was destined to turn the vampire world on its head. After the events of BD, I imagined quite a few vampires would be intrigued by what his way of life could mean to them. There was a definite shift in power on the horizon- power that he never asked for, never assumed...

That seems to be one of the running themes of his life- refusing power that other beings scramble to possess, even though it's handed to him at every turn, first as a human, then as a vampire.

Instead he ultimately chooses to govern only himself. Even his family didn't stay with him because he compelled them to, but because he set an example they admired and loved. His power wasn't gotten by taking it from others, but in others giving him their trust. And I also think he was destined to die before the other Cullens (though not due to surprise mortality, which I'm still sniffling over), with Edward and Bella taking up his mantle, along with the rest of his family.

I'm looking forward to seeing how his overall journey plays out in your book.

This came to me the second time I read Breaking Dawn. There is a moment when everyone is finally letting Bella just be with Renesmee. She’s holding her and looking out the back window as Renesmee ‘tells’ Bella about everything she had missed while she was being changed. One of those moments was Edward singing/humming to Renesmee and Bella says that she can vaguely tell she’s in the background of that memory somehow.

I originally wrote and posted this elsewhere about a week after BD was released.

Interesting start. Your description makes me curious as to where you'll take this story in terms of its mythological/religious roots.

Author's Response:

This story originally started as ideas that I thought about based on my own experiences with spirituality and wicca in the real world while reading events in Breaking Dawn.  We both know that the fourth book kinda left more experienced readers with a bad taste in their mouth, but I had my own ideas of what was possible.  WHY did Bella have such an easier time with her first days as a vampire?  What was so different about her, and you can't tell me it's just because she was "prepared..."  That's a load of crap. You'll see where I go with THAT idea around chapter...what was it again?  *looks it up*  ...chapter 12, as I have them written up so far, but it could get a slight rewrite.  I'm not sure yet.

Also, I'm so sick and tired of everyone using the over-abused "Volturi" as the end-all and be-all of the freakin "real world" when, truth be told, there are greater evils in the world than a bunch of power-hungry vampires...so I thought...what if the really scary stuff was MANIPULATING all of this?  Why would the Volturi still be recruiting powerful people if they were already the most powerful?  Doesn't make logical sense unless you can factor in an external influence...say someone pushing things, whispering things into the Triad's ear over the last few centuries...keeping things going.  What if they're looking for something...maybe even someone...for their own purpose and they're just USING the Volturi as pawns on a huge chess-board.  I'm still working on how this all ends so I'm talking to another writer from Twilighted.net who seems to have a similar appreciation for storytelling to assist with some ideas.

As for the story itself, I'm going to let you read it yourself and get your own ideas.

Good grief, how thoroughly demoralizing.

Aren't we glad it didn't really happen, and that Carlisle made the "right" choice all those years ago? Okay, yes, technically, none of Twilight really happened, but we all like to pretend.

It was poignant, melancholy, and very well done, giselle- perhaps a little too well done.

I have to say, this is an oustanding tale, and I'm sorry not to have reviewed sooner. I kept expecting this story to fall apart, but it doesn't. There's just one charming turn after another.

There is so much to admire in what you've done. The period colloquialisms and attitudes are rendered well without taking themselves too seriously, often coming across as their own subtle parodies. At the same time, there's a respect and honesty afoot. Period pieces are such slaves to modern ideals most of the time, but not here. Where many period fics try to turn Bella into a spitfire feminist, here she's truly a product of her time. She embraces her role, largely devoid of any angst about being "oppressed," and makes the most of everything available to her. She's strong and independent without being cynical.

I love that she handily solved the kidnapping dilemma on her own, and didn't bother with feeling traumatized, where other authors would have had her cringing like a melodramatic damsel in distress, to be followed with much post-rescue angst. Your take was unbelievably refreshing.

The secondary characters are well-handled, too. There's something really fun about the idea of Charlie being the town gossip, for example, and Alice excited about watching the ranch hands enjoy her French cooking. I'm enjoying the Rose/Emmett line, too, as well as Sam's, and am looking forward to what you do with Edward's parents.

I confess that Jacob is coming across more as a caricature than a character. He may as well have a mustache to twirl as he plots out his dastardly deeds. That would be my one and only criticism, but even then, it's not really a criticism, because it's still fun.

All in all, bravo! *applause* *hoots*

Author's Response:

Thank you very much for your kind review.

I do agree with you about Jacob.  I should have spent more time on him.  I have tried to reveal more of his inner angst through his sister's musing about him.  He was a spoiled but plucky child and coddled by his family.  He was over indulged to the point where once he had control of his fortune, he had none to tell him no until Bella came along.  He is an example of lack of self-discipline run amok.   I thought, though, since I was writing a western, I could be just a tad campy when it came to the villian of the piece.

I appreciate your well thought out comments and hope that you continue to enjoy the story.  I think there aer about four more chapters to go.

Very good reading so far. Smooth and engaging.

Also, you've hit upon one of my favorite Twilight subplots, Marcus and Didyme. I always thought the circumstances of her demise would be fun to explore, but it's almost never mentioned in fanfic, let alone explored. It didn't occur to me that a decent treatment of their story could be AU/AH, but it looks like you're on your way to just that.

I would be remiss if I didn't (clears throat gently), point out that there are some typos that got by your validation beta- but they didn't ruin it for me. :)

I've really enjoyed the tone and mood of your narrative in this opening. The plot set-up is less kind to Renee than I normally like in a Twilight re-telling, but it feels authentic in this story, and that's what counts.

I particularly like how Bella comes across as she relates her background; she doesn't let unfair circumstances turn her into a victim, but her vulnerability is still intact because of her capacity to experience these things and recognize their impact on who she is.

The dream/prediction thing is a neat twist, and I look forward to seeing how you use it later.

Author's Response:
