Hi! I'm a 37 year old mom to 3, married to my highschool sweetheart. I read entirely too much fan fiction for my own good. I was a nurse before kids, but now am simply a domestic goddess. Detours is my first attempt at writing anything. I mostly started it as a challenge to myself as my birthday approached- kind of a bucket list thing. It's a fun creative outlet after a day of the baby barfing all over me while the girls fight about who stole what nintendo ds game.

Summary: 
Bella went cliff diving, but it didn't turn out so well. She broke her back. A decade later, Edward reappears in her life on the same night she loses her best friend and husband to a freak accident. Now a graduate student in Women's Studies, Bella isn't thrilled to see him. But when the Cullens re-enter Bella's life, they bring change, hope, and a new joint project that will require all their expertises.

Special Update:
For personal reasons (a ridiculously full teaching schedule and being recently put in charge of a bi-annual local conference and ongoing project), I am no longer able to reply to reviews and questions. But that said, I wanted to give a BIG THANK YOU to EVERYBODY for the wonderful feedback and kind words that have been sent my way since the completion of this story in August 2009. I do still check my messages about once every 1-2 weeks and read *every* review. I just have too many to reply to anymore, but I didn’t want anyone to think I was ignoring her/him in particular, or didn’t appreciate readers taking time to leave a review. Writing this story was tons of fun and I’m thrilled readers seem to enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed the chance to write it. I can’t tell you how flattering that is!!! As I used to reply to all reviews, I feel a little badly about this decision, but work has been requiring virtually all of my time since the new (academic) year began.

I love the reference to"Orion!" It is a song I often think of when I am outside walking my dogs at night. I learned it back in 1983...6th grade music class with Mr. Cox. It was a shitty year for me, but I adored music and band classes...they helped me escape. I'll be sure to check out the link!

this is my favorite chapter so far in your wonderful story! Bella won't lose charlie if (when) she is changed! i can just picture the scene in my head,charlie aghast at edward, only accepting what he has to for the time being. i really like martha. you've created awonderful character in her. And brilliant how rose is blunt about the way things are and what needs to be done.

Hey, Katie-
First of all, congratulations! You finished a wonderful story that I am glad to have read. I can't say that about some fics!
Second, you had me in tears over Martha's death. It is almost 5 years to the day that I said goodbye to my mother-in-law, who I was fortunate enough to have met when I was 14 and fell in love with her son. I knew her 18 years. She changed my life for the better, and while my kids won't really remember her, I try to remind them often of her love and spirit. I'm glad that your Bella got her goodbye. My mil was unconscious as I talked to her, but tears were coming from her eyes while I talked to her. I like to think she heard me.
I'm also glad your edward resolved his issues of the soul. Eternity is a long time to be carrying around such a heavy burden, vampire or not. I think that things can weigh your soul down much more profoundly than any physical burden can. Kudos to you for a fantastic and plausible resolution!
I'm hoping that you continue to write. I enjoyed the journey!
