After unexpectedly being given an antique desk and finding a letter written by Edward to his cousin over nine decades earlier in a hidden compartment, Bella, on a whim, decides to respond and starts them on a journey neither could have ever imagined.

Perhaps there are some things we aren't meant to understand, just accept....

This story will eventually contain character death - NOT Edward or Bella.

Wonderful chapter.

I understand why Billy & Jake were so freaked out when they got to the campsite, but I don't understand why Charlie was.

A twid snaps, big animal in the shadows.  With protectors like these, she doesn't need enemies.

Loved Edward's thought on IVs.  Does he have a law degree in his background?  I wonder how long it will take Jake to figure it out

Author's Response:

Yes, actually, he does have a law degree.  Three of them, actually.  No idea about canon, but my Edward does, anyway.

Not that I think for one second that Edward would've let the treaty stand in his way if Bella's life was on the line, but I loved that he was able to turn that technicality around on the pack.  What's the saying?  Necessity is the mother of invention.  I guess it's the mother of creative thinking too.

Finding this chapter up so soon was like waking up on Christmas morning!

Thank you.  I hope you don't have Bella dance around this too much.

I wonder if the Volturi know about the Quilluete web site?  People seem to get the vampire thing rather quickly from that.

Author's Response:

I should've put a bow on it!

I think, as someone who has had to keep a secret from the people she loves, Bella understands that sometimes it's necessary.  Personally, I see the *how* as secondary to the fact that they're together, which has always been the goal of my story--to bring them together.   Bella has her Edward now, which is all she ever wanted--her two Edwards were only ever just the one delivered back to her.  The next couple chapters will be their relationship progressing without reality barging in on them, but when it does force Edward's hand, it'll be a doozy!

I don't know if the Volturi know about the Quileute website; I never thought about it.  If I had to guess, I'd say no.  I can't picture Aro surfing the web.  Although with all the thoughts he must've read while feeding off humans, he'd certainly know about the internet, but I can't see him seeing it as a threat.  The werewolves he knows of wouldn't have a website.

Looking forward to seeing Edward's next letter

Author's Response:

Thank you for reviewing!  You won't have to wait long.  I have chapter four back from Project Team Beta, and as soon as I get through their comments and corrections, I can submit it for validation here.

Nice chapter. I preferhow your B & E relate to each other & communicate with each other over SM's.

I have to laugh at Edward's cooking.  I'm wondering, & I wonder if Bella is too, if Edward used utensils to prepare the prom night dinner?

Author's Response:

Yes, although I didn't write the scene, I'm sure Edward would've just used his hands to prepare the prom night dinner.  Otherwise, it'd be like use using tongs to take an Oreo out of the tray, wouldn't it?

I really thought it was very important that they communicate openly, but having a number of smaller conversations felt much more normal than one long one, so they're scattered here and there.

Chapter 48 is in the validation queue, and it's a doosey!  Thanks for reviewing!

What is Carlisle waiting for?  He's put it together, why not tell Edward?

Author's Response:

Ive had several people ask that.  He will, but it's not that easy.  Telling your son that his mate is a different species and that even though she is only 17, you knew her 91 years ago isn't something you can just blurt out.  I wrote my Edward will all of canon Edward's hang ups, souless monster etc., and Carlisle knows him well enough to foresee the issues Edward is likely to have with a his mate being human.  He just wants time to plan what to say.  Just because Carlisle suspects/knows that Edward loved Bella when he was human and clearly still has feelings for her even if he can't remember her, he has no idea how Bella felt about Edward - for all he knows, it could have just been friendship.  He has no way of knowing if she returned his feeling then, or how she would feel about him now that he's no longer human  And I think there'd likely be some self doubt; its a pretty incredible theory, and Carlisle has no proof.  He doesn't have the letters.  He knows where they are, or at least where they should be, but that would be an awfully big invasion of Edward's privacy to go looking for them, even if it was with good intenions.

Wow.  I wonder that Carlisle never mentioned his precog friend in Pheonix.

What a great chapter.  Poor Bella

Author's Response:

It will be explained a little in chapters to come that Edward does not like being reminded of the human life he cannot remember.  As far as Carlisle knows, the Bella he mentioned lived in 1918.  He has no idea that Bella was from a different time, he just thinks she was a human girl living in 1918 who was, like you said, precognizant.

I'm sorry to see Renee & Phil go, even though it will be easier for Bella & Charlie to change.

Looking forward to Bella's reaction to the mind reading.  Does Charlie already know all the Cullen's extra skills?

I hope that Edward will tell Bella about Emily's injury & that she will listen.  Maybe if she & Charlie go together & she doesn't allow herself to be alone with Jacob it will turn out all right.

Author's Response:

It was hard to write, but I knew all along I was going to kill them both, and I knew how and when.  The way they basically just let Renee hanging in canon never sat right with me; I wanted a clean break. I liked (maybe not the right word!) the irony that with the threat of the vampire army coming to destroy them, it was a common car accident that took people Bella loved.  Sort of a flashback to the Mason's maid, Nellie's, brother.  He survived the war for over a year only to fall to the flu.  Also, I really wanted both Edward and Bella to have to experience something the other had gone through.  Even though Edward can't remember his father, he knows he died very suddenly.

I would think that yes, Charlie already knows all about the extra skills.  Although I didn't write it into the story, I'm sure he and Tanya would've had very nearly the same talks that Bella and Edward will be having.  I didn't include them because I wanted to keep the focus on Edward and Bella.  This is their story.

The teaser for the next chapter is up on the forums page, and it pertains to exactly the scene you mention.  I don't want to give too much away, but I will tell you that that was one of my favorite scenes to write.

Thanks for reviewing!

Wow.  Charlie & Tanya?  Edward (2009) must be relieved that she's turned her attention to someone else.

I love this story.

Author's Response:

Yes, I'm sure he must be.  I'm so glad you like my story!  Thank you for reviewing!  Chapter 5 is still with Project Team Beta, but I'll get it in to my Twilighted beta as soon as possible.

That was so sad.  I loved the formatting while Bella was thinking about the flu.  I think it realy added to the emotions.

I can't wait to find out how much Vampward remembers about her.  I wonder if he & Carlisle retrieved the painting, photos and the letters.

Author's Response:

I thought the formating added to it, too.  It showed how her mind was racing, I thought.

Vampire Edward is coming up very soon, I promise!

Wow!  I'd love to hear 2009 Edward's thoughts on settling in Forks.

Great chapter.  I'm glad Bella had it out with Jacob.  The funeral was very moving as well

Author's Response:

It alwasy bugged me in canon that Bella never stood up to Jake for Edward.  In my mind, Bella is just as protective of Edward as he is of her, maybe even moreso because she feels she let him down when he was human and the epidemic hit.  There was nothing she could do, and she can't stand feeling like there's nothing she can do now.

Fortunately, I've still got both of my parents, so I didn't have any personal experience to draw from, but I really wanted to keep the funeral as realistic as possible.

I'm glad you liked it, thanks for reviewing!

I really hope Bella sends copies & hangs on to the originals.  I also hope she re-reads ALL of them before she send s the copies off

Author's Response:

They will be copies.  She wouldn't part with the originals for anything.  I should've made that clear, but it will be in the next chapter.

Thanks for revieiwng!

Great chapter.  I like that your Bella, unlike canon Bella, actually understands that there are valid reasons for Edward not getting carried away.  It always irritated me how insecure canon Bella was in edward's love for her.  I like that your Bella knows he is truly in love with her and doesn't doubt it.

Oh Edward!  Tanya summed it up nicely.  His reaction towards the cold was hysterical.  He really needs to chill out.  I'd love an out take of Carlisle's POV on reassuring Edward

Author's Response:

I don't go over Edward and Charlie's talk at all, just what Edward thinks in reflection.  I really think Edward has a lot of very real issues with his shame and his guilt over what he's done.  I think he's basically a very moral person, vampire or not, and the lives he took weigh very heavily on him, criminals or not.  Bella had the advantage over Edward, she learned the truth in private and had a chance to come to terms with it, plus she had already come to the realization that something was up on her own.  Edward had the truth thrust at him unexpectedly, with no warning at all and under horrible circumstances.  But don't worry, I don't keep him away too long, something is about to happen that will....  Oops, got a bit ahead of myself!  You'll just have to wait and see what happens next, but like I said, no New Mooning!

Thanks for reviewing!

Author's Response:

Thanks so much!  I'm having more and more people comment that they're looking forward to her trip to Forks, and I have to admit I'm starting to get nervous!  I hope it doesn't disappoint!  I'm stating to bite my nails!

Bella rocks!  i thought she had picked up a lighter.  A little unrealistic to think that clumsy Bella could sucessfuly jump on Y's back, but since the story is about vampires & werewolves realistic is a relative term.

I;m interestred to see the Volturi.  In canon, they had a reason for sitting back & letting Victoria & co do as much damage to the Cullen's as possible.  I wonder why they ended up late to the party this time

Author's Response:

Team Swan Rocks!  I think Bella's clumsyness comes out most often when she's thinking about it.  When she doesnt' think about it and just acts, she's not nearly as clumsy.  Plus having gotten her arms around Edward at that point, Victoria would've been relatively stationary.  So Bella didn't have to try to jump on her back while she was moving around so fast she was just a blur to Bella's human eyes.  It's amazing what desperation can empower us to do.  I see Victoria in that situation as being incredulous and amused, not thinking for a second that a human could possibly be a threat.  But she'd have recognized Bella's scent because Edward would've been covered with it, and I think she'd have enjoyed knowing that Bella's being there would be tortorous for Edward.

The answer to your question will be in chapter 49.  (Not much room for it to be anywhere else, is there?)  It's vague, because I only wanted the reader to know what Edward and Bella knew, but I think if you're looking for it, you'll be able to get it.  Bella, of course, only gets what she sees.  Edward will be able to read their thoughts, but only what they're thinking at the moment--not necessarily what led up to that moment.

Chapter 49 is in the validation queue--after that, there's just the epilogue!  Thanks for reviewing!

Well I hope Edward comes back quickly.  I'm so glad the rest of the family is supporting Bella while Edward indulges in his angst fest

Author's Response:

I don't see him as *indulging* I see him more as genuinely distraught at the realization that Bella knows what he is.  I've always felt Edward carried an enormous amount of baggage that was never really dealt with in canon--from his rebelous years, for example.  So when they have their talk, they will try to deal with as much of it as possible.

Loved their datenight.  So glad Edward was open with her about his change.

Author's Response:

I'm so glad you like it!    It was one of my favorite chapters.

SO, SO, SO much better than prom!  Let's face it--Prom, a lot of hype, a lot of money, dead freaking boring.

I think it's very important that they really open up to each other and communicate--and that they take each other's feelings into consideration and respect that even if they don't agree, that doesn't make the other wrong.  I don't think they did enough of that in canon, so I really wanted them to have good talks.

Chapter 45 is in the validation queue already, so it should be up soon.

Congratulations on the birth of your grandchild.

This was a sad chapter to read.  I imagine we've got a way to go yet to the bottom before things start looking up

Author's Response:

Thanks so much!

We've pretty much hit bottom, but we're going to lay there licking our wounds for a little while before starting to climb back up.

Thanks for reviewing!
