Author's Response: Yes, Bella is Edward's shield, just in a different form in my story. It was fun coming up with these variations and imagining how they would affect the characters. As for Edward's limitations, he does need to speak with Bella, but it's going to take some courage on his part. Poor fellow--I just want to give him a hug (and Carlisle, too, while I'm at it...).

Well, I doubt that they will go back to barely speaking after this! I found Edward's assessment logical and thorough, and I enjoyed watching him figure things out and encourage her to get better! I feel bad about his misconception that he's better now, though!
