Bella is a newborn vampire that is unlike others of her kind. Changed by James, a centuries old vegetarian vampire who has an unhealthy obsession with making Bella his mate, she flees her life in small town Forks and heads to Chicago. Intent on using her new abilities to help people, she and her best friend Rosalie spend their nights walking the streets of Chicago, searching for people to save, find the missing, and bring criminals to justice. In a dark alley, she runs into Edward Cullen, a handsome, cocky, homicide detective who immediately is captivated by the supernatural beauty.
The two eventually come together to bring down a serial killer who is not human and Bella finds herself falling for the cop and his entire family, revealing her secret and putting them all in jeopardy. When tragedy strikes, Bella is faced with the difficult decision to bring others into her world or leave them to die, including the man she loves.
