Ah - woman - you did well . . . Brought me back to my Little House on the Prairie days. Thoroughly enjoyed myself for two days, to the detriment of my laundry pile.
Book recommendations? Not sure if you even want them, but this reminded me a lot of two books (er, book and a series).
First was "One Thousand White Women," by Jim Fergus, about the government trading women (mostly from mental institutions) for horses. I haven't ever really been able to find solid proof of this, but the book itself was fantastic, fictional or not.
Other is the Outlander series, which if you haven't read, you should. Diana Gabaldon, check it out.
(Was it Laudanum, or opium, in Bella's "tincture" from the Doc? *snicker*)

Taking one last deep breath, I bent down on my knees and assumed the position that Angela taught me.
