You know those fics where Edward doesn't come back and Bella forgets about him and five seconds later she's in bed with Jacob and none of it makes any damn sense?
Yeah, this isn't one of them.

This story picks up from the moment in New Moon when Jacob has driven Bella home after the cliff diving incident, right before he catches the scent of Alice. Only in this telling, Alice wasn't looking, so there's no sudden appearance at Bella's house, no Rosalie calling Edward and sending him on a suicidal mission to Volterra, and no reason for Bella to do anything but believe that Edward didn't love her anymore. This is simply a story of what might have happened if everyone stayed mostly in character and Edward's return was delayed. Yes, delayed. Because we all know that he was "this close" to coming back on his own anyhow.
So what would have happened if Bella had tried to move on with her life?  Would she have found happiness with Jacob?  And would Edward be too late?

Picking up from Edward's leave in New Moon, Bella never rescued Edward, Edward never came back, but somebody did ... 

 This story is set five years after that sad day Edward left Bella in the woods.

For years Bella searches for Edward, eager to tell him her new found secret.  As Bella gives in to her fears, that Edward really is gone, she runs into her past in the least likely place.  Only to find out, her past has a secret to tell as well.

"The smell of the worn book had distracted me from the wonderful aroma that had engulfed the room.  It had subdued my venom, had forced me back into a human-like state, my inner monster slowly crawling back into his darkened hole.  I swallowed one last time, and decided to glance at this glorious teacher.  Obviously he was a man of impeccable taste.  I might actually enjoy Senior Literature this year.

Prologue

    The truest and simplest fact of life is that nothing last forever. It doesn’t matter if you are human or otherwise; someone out there holds your life in their hands. But things don’t always happen the way you expect them to. Sometimes an individual comes along and intervenes; effectively postponing the evitable. For the Cullen clan and their friends, that intervention was me. They were living in what was a seemingly perfect existence, but each and every one of them had a sickening feeling in the pits of their stomachs. There was a threat overshadowing them that desired nothing more than to destroy their serenity.
    I could say that I choose to get involved because it was the right thing to do, but that would just sound cliché. The true is that I did it for vengeance. I did it out of anger, hatred and resentment. I did it for regret, guilt and to atone for the lives I had destroyed. I did it for a moral belief in justice and that all have the right to live their lives without fear that someday someone will come along and destroy everything they hold dearest. I did it for the family I had lost and the one I had to gain. And I did it for love. I could have just as easily walked away and never looked back, but had I done that, I wouldn’t have been me.
    My name is Taven Curry and I am a vampire. It sound strange, but believe me, there are far stranger things in this world than just vampires. I am not what you would call your typical vampire; in more ways that one. For example, my moral compass points true north. I have a very clear understanding of what is right and what is wrong. A very larger part of who I was, who I became and who I am is because of her influence. Life has a twisted sense of humor and a way of altering a person permanently in the most unexplainable ways. She had changed my life when I was human, but neither in my wildest dream nor my darkest nightmares did I ever expect her to do it again in my life as vampire. Though time and circumstances had separated Bella and me for years, another circumstance had brought us back together and in the end she was my saving grace.

NOTICE TO ALL Dated 04/21/11. Okay, so my life a changed alot since I started writing this. I've lost my desire to continue. I had intended on adding a few more chapters of Leah's POV, which is why I didn't continue. But since I'm unable to, I am just going to post the last remaining chapters I have had written. So I'm going to type them and try to post one a week until it is done. Sorry it has taken so long. Life goes on unfortuantly and we can stay 19 forever
