When Alice's visions reveal the Volturi's horrfying plans to descend upon the Cullen family, armed with Irina's testimony of an immortal child sighted in their care, she enlists Jasper's aid in seeking out the one hope that may spare all of their lives... if they return alive.

This story serves to fill in Alice and Jasper's adventures away from the Cullen family during Breaking Dawn, and is second in an intended series based strongly in existing canon. That said, it is highly recommended that the first story in the series, Down The Rabbit Hole, be read, as parts of the created canon/backstory for Alice Cullen will become relevant down the road in this story as well. As with DTRH, this story draws on allusions to Alice's Adventures In Wonderland and Through The Looking-Glass, And What Alice Found There by Lewis Carroll.

Rated NC-17 for violence, language and a dash of lemons. This story will occassionally contain dialogue and text from Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer for clarity and continuity; no infringement is intended and all chapters will be noted accordingly in that instance.

On March 16, 2006,  the World changed, and everything and anything that the Cullens ever cared about was lost. They had to find their own way in this New World. Edward never wished to exist in a world where Bella didn't.  Unfortunately, his family desperately needed him, so he'd stay to help them.   And by doing so, he hoped to redeem himself for his failure to save the one creature he couldn't protect. 

With rumours in the South of humans feeding off the living and stealing people from their beds, the Cullens have a responsibility to protect the ones they can from those monsters in the night.  This was Edward's last chance to fight for his soul and his salvation.  He would finally be ready to face Judgement day and be deemed worthy enough to be with Bella once again.  Or would something or someone change the path he was destined to go down?  Faith, hope and love are powerful things, and Edward is about to find out just how powerful they are.

Yes... this is the story that is set during a post-apocalyptic nuclear war. Just try the Prologue to get a feel for it before passing judgment. You might be surprised. Warning: There is violence and disturbing images the further the story goes along.

Edward, Bella and Alice are drawn into a no-win scenario in Volterra after Edward's attempted suicide-by-Volturi in the Palazzo dei Priori .  Aro confronts Edward to make an impossible choice, with Alice as Aro's unwitting accomplice.  How will Edward's choice affect his reunion with Bella, and what future can they hope to salvage in the aftermath?

Story begins in New Moon, during Chapter 21, "The Verdict," but enters the AU when Aro reads Alice's mind...

In canon through Eclipse with one exception; Victoria escaped. Chapters will alternate between Bella, Jacob, and Edward's POV. Please note that though some actions may be slightly OOC, it is only to allow for further character development.

The Volturi, angered by Victoria's actions, have placed a price on her head, attracting a mysterious bounty hunter. Alice’s werewolf blindness never allowed her to see Bella’s cliff diving at La Push, so she and the rest of the Cullens continued to stay away from Forks.

Bella struggles with her changing feelings for Jacob, her pain from Edward’s rejection, and her lingering feelings of love for the vampire who broke her heart and disappeared. Will Jacob and Bella find their way to each other and get their chance at happiness? And when a miserable and heartbroken Edward returns to beg Bella for forgiveness, what will she do?

As relationships change, Victoria continues her vendetta.

New Moon AU. During Bella’s run-in with Laurent, what if the wolves hadn’t shown up when they did? What if they had shown up just a few minutes later? Those minutes change Bella's life forever, and she must learn to deal with the consequences.

"Hurry, Bella!” he pleaded with me, and I made my numb legs move faster and stretch further with each step.  I was almost to him…

And then he was gone, the sunbeam empty just as I reached it.  Before I could panic, I caught sight of him, twenty feet ahead again and waving me forward.  The fire had reached my thighs now, and I couldn’t feel the pain in my left arm over the burning agony.  I could feel the searing moving further through my veins with each heart beat; the hole in my chest throbbed in tempo with it.

My family was going to hate me, except for Rosalie and Bella of course. They were with me one hundred percent. Edward was going to think I was the biggest traitor, and he was right. I had promised him I would always protect Bella, as had the rest of our family. But now… now I was siding with my new sister on the thing that could kill her. But it was the baby that made me do a complete one-eighty and agree with Bella. My niece or nephew; that child would be safe and happy once it was born, and I would gladly fight to the death for that. The wolves would have Hell to pay if they even dared lay a hand on Bella or the baby. And by the looks of everything it may just come to that. I gazed up at Edward, his face disappointed and anguished by my decision.

“I’m sorry.”

Edward gains a chance at coveted humanity when all Bella wants is to be immortal with him.
