A/N about the rating: The narrative in this story ranges between PG-13 (most of it) and R (occasional language and occasional non-graphic reference to mature themes). An isolated technicality in a late chapter has necessitated changing the rating from R to NC-17, however R is a much better measure of the farthest outer limit of what the reader will encounter in this tale.

Prologue

    The truest and simplest fact of life is that nothing last forever. It doesn’t matter if you are human or otherwise; someone out there holds your life in their hands. But things don’t always happen the way you expect them to. Sometimes an individual comes along and intervenes; effectively postponing the evitable. For the Cullen clan and their friends, that intervention was me. They were living in what was a seemingly perfect existence, but each and every one of them had a sickening feeling in the pits of their stomachs. There was a threat overshadowing them that desired nothing more than to destroy their serenity.
    I could say that I choose to get involved because it was the right thing to do, but that would just sound cliché. The true is that I did it for vengeance. I did it out of anger, hatred and resentment. I did it for regret, guilt and to atone for the lives I had destroyed. I did it for a moral belief in justice and that all have the right to live their lives without fear that someday someone will come along and destroy everything they hold dearest. I did it for the family I had lost and the one I had to gain. And I did it for love. I could have just as easily walked away and never looked back, but had I done that, I wouldn’t have been me.
    My name is Taven Curry and I am a vampire. It sound strange, but believe me, there are far stranger things in this world than just vampires. I am not what you would call your typical vampire; in more ways that one. For example, my moral compass points true north. I have a very clear understanding of what is right and what is wrong. However, just because I know when something is wrong doesn’t mean I always follow in suit. I am far from a saint. I have loyally and willingly served a trio of tyrants who stood for everything I hated and threatened to destroy the last person alive who remember who I once was before I became the monster. A very larger part of who I was, who I became and who I am is because of her influence. Life has a twisted sense of humor and a way of altering a person permanently in the most unexplainable ways. She had changed my life when I was human, but neither in my wildest dream nor my darkest nightmares did I ever expect her to do it again in my life as vampire. Though time and circumstances had separated Bella and me for years, another circumstance had brought us back together and in the end she was my saving grace.
