I didn't like Ed Snr any better when hearing it from his point of view. Asshole.

Author's Response:

I didn't think that anyone would like him any better, I just thought that it was important to hear things from his POV, because it adds a whole 'notha level to the crazy.

Great chapter.  I'm glad you did this as an actual chapter instead of an outtake.

It's weird how someone can go from sane and normal to completely whacked.  But seeing into his mind - it was eye-opening.  I was surprised at what trigged some of his anger... it seemed like he was expecting Edward to be respectful to Ed Sr because he was Edward's father... like the title of father automatically meant a certain amount of respect... and when he didn't get that, he went nuts. The same with Elizabeth... as soon as he felt that she was disrespecting him (either by hiding the money she was saving, or not wanting to be intimate, or disobeying)... bam!  She got hit.  Just like what happened with Edward when they met at Starbucks.  Although this could also be a matter of pride.

Can't wait for the next chapter.

Author's Response:

Thanks, Burntcore.  I'm glad that this outtake has been so well-received as an actual chapter.

Ed Sr. has a strange over-inflated sense of entitlement when it comes to commanding respect from Edward.  It was a strange experience seeing it through his eyes.

*shudders*

A necessary chapter.  Edward's father clearly suffers from serious mental illness.  It's unfortunate that the time in prison didn't result in a diagnoses and more serious treatment as part of the condition of his release.

Author's Response:

I mentioned to another reviewer that I think part of the problem was that Ed Sr. had "tamed" the demon while he was in prison, in a controlled environment.  On the outside, things aren't controlled and it's easy to fall back into old behaviours/mindsets/habits.  Had he had the same support outside of prison, he might have been better off.

i absolutely love branded, and i am loving this one so far.  the maury povich line is hilarious!  it's more of the bella that i hope she shows as this story progresses - a little whacky and more carefree!

Author's Response:

Thanks, edc_robp.  I'm so glad to hear that you liked Branded, and I hope that you'll continue to enjoy Road Maps.  :)

So I totally appreciate the way you got into Ed, Sr.'s messed up head.  You articulate him very well...and that's hard to do.  Being a crazy "matricidal sperm donor."

Brava!

Author's Response:

Wow!  Thanks, LJ!  I really appreciate that coming from you.  :)

It was a really hard chapter to write...even spending a small amount of time trying to get into his head was disheartening and frankly, frightening.

Reviewer: My Friend Alice (Signed) · Date: January 22, 2010 04:06 PM · On: Daddy Dearest

very scary...he is still very sick!

Author's Response:

Yes, MFA, he is.  That was a hard chapter to write...being stuck in his head for a while made me a little nuts.

Reviewer: danceegirl92 (Signed) · Date: January 22, 2010 03:56 PM · On: Daddy Dearest

He is sick! I mean has he always been mental or was it something that progressed due to his childhood? Anyway, as long as Bella, Peanut and Edward are okay, I guess I can ignore Ed Sr.

Author's Response:

I think he was always a little mental ill, and I think his upbringing compounded it, not to mention the drinking.

Reviewer: LilCullen454 (Signed) · Date: January 22, 2010 03:47 PM · On: Daddy Dearest

Wow that is one sick son of a bi$ch!

He really doesn't take any responsibility for what he has done.

We haven't heard the last of him either, have we?

Author's Response:

Yeah, he is one sick son of a bitch.

I'm not saying anything about whether or not he's gone.  I'm evil.

Reviewer: seeker (Signed) · Date: January 22, 2010 02:41 PM · On: Daddy Dearest

He is evil wow thanks you been posting fast thanks, you know me i love this story Again another great chapter

Author's Response:

The credit for the speedy posting goes to my beta, AliceDances01, who rocks the pants.  :)  She's some kind of wonderful.

Thanks, seeker.

Wow what a jerk, I knew I hated him before but man I never thought of him. Even through his eyes he is still a jerk. I love three chapter or four lost count with so many awesome chapters.

Author's Response:

Gives you another perspective of him, eh?

Glad you're still hanging in there.

Reviewer: Daylen (Signed) · Date: January 22, 2010 05:23 AM · On: The Sperm Donor

oh wow! I have to admit I was doing that hissing/holding breath thing when Bella ran over and got kicked in the head for her troubles.

I can sort of understand Edward pushing his luck like that, though again with Bella present? It could've got worse without her, I guess.

I'm not convinced we've seen the last of Ed Sr, even with his upbringing, he presumably would've had access to counselling and medications to help get his condition under control - though I know from experience with various friends that you get out of it what you put in. The meds only really "work" if you're diligent about taking them and talking with your doctor about the effects. The most common thing I've heard from friends is they don't like the "fuzziness/disconnection" that comes sometimes, the science still isn't exact for all of this but we spend so much time being told that the doctor "knows" how to help us that we often don't go into the detail needed for them TO help.

I'm looking forward to some happy reunions with the rest of the group now :) - and in the darker corners of my imagination am kind of dreading Ed Sr stealing our girl's Lullaby composition as his own to get his big break :P Hopefully I'm borrowing craziness at that point though lol

(I finally caught up on all the new chapters! :)

Author's Response:

It's going to sound weird, because I wrote the story, but i really questioned Edward goading his father on.  I hate to say it, but he kind of brought it on himself.  DON'T get me wrong, I love Edward to bits, and I really feel for what he went through, but I couldn't convince him not to spur on his father, especially with Bella nearby.  I really think that for the first time, Edward was only thinking about himself, and it's unfortunate that Bella got caught in the crossfire.

Now, Bella going along with him also raised an alarm for me.  I really wanted Carlisle to go with him, but it's true, Ed Sr. would have caught sight of Carlisle and it would have been over.

Ed Sr. mentions that while he was in prison he learned to control the demon, but I think once you're out in the real world, a lot of what you learn flies out the window.  In a controlled environment like prison, having a steady schedule, medication, therapy, would lull him into believing that he was fine.  If he doesn't uphold his mental maintenance when he's released, odds are that he'll relapse.

You're right about there not be an exact science to the med end of things.  I know from personal experience.  *shudders*

Ed Sr.'s POV is coming up and I'm warning you now that his thought processes are far from normal.

Reviewer: Daylen (Signed) · Date: January 22, 2010 04:21 AM · On: Contact

ok now I'm thinking Emmett needs to take Edward to the gym for the guy-machismo thing and lose some of the frustration that's building up in him.

Although getting some dedicated music time runs a close second...

The meeting coming up should be interesting, especially with Bella going along for the ride.

Author's Response:

Edward should have gone to the punching bags that they had set up for Bella back when they were all living in Forks.  ;)

Reviewer: Daylen (Signed) · Date: January 22, 2010 04:07 AM · On: Breakdown

Well I'm slowly catching up on the recent chapters :)

Edward's stuck on a not-so-enjoyable trip down memory lane (to put it mildly), though hopefully at the end of it all, he'll be able to make some kind of sense from it.

I'm kind of torn on whether to be annoyed with Edward for letting himself go nuts like that in front of Bella. He knows her history, and his own fears expressed only weeks before should've been enough to head that off, but then, I've heard it said that NOT reacting in a "typically male" way shows a lack of understanding the situation as well :S

There's another long, hard road ahead for B&E, and the Cullens in general, I think too, since it looks like Esme at least needs some closure too :)

Author's Response:

I think that something snapped in Edward while he was reading the diaries and threw all sense of his usual decorum out the window.  It was a very un-Edwardian reaction, very self-centered, which is not his usual MO.  He would normally be focused on Bella's needs first.

Personally, while I was shocked that he reacted that way, I think it was good for him to lose it for a few minutes, a good freak out is good for the soul...sometimes.

Reviewer: Daylen (Signed) · Date: January 22, 2010 03:48 AM · On: Lullabies and Triple Word Scores

Whilst it's sad for the honeymoon to be ending, I'm kind of looking forward to the eventual visit of Jake and Leah down Forks way :)

The conservatory visit sounded like it was very good for Edward to play out some of the emotions he's been going through lately... Leah's addition seems to have given the Lullaby a life of its own.

As for the BFF question - from the women I'd probably go for Bella (we'd have the reading in common at the very least), but the guy side (that I kind of have to flip around on these questions ;) is probably Jasper - Emmett, despite being a fun guy, would be too intimidating physically, and Edward's just a little too close to my psyche, Carlisle's too much on the academic front... I could handle that in a mentor/father-figure but BFF ends up Jasper because I think he'd be more of a balance to my own character - he's soothing and quiet. Being quiet is generally hard for me to do, that, and people are so used to me talking all the time that if I'm quiet for more than five minutes I get bombarded with "Are you ok today?" questions :S

Author's Response:

Hi Daylen,  I missed you!!

I need to apologize for the gender-specific questions...sometimes I forget that there's actually a guy reading this stuff. :)

Your reasoning behind why you chose who you did is pretty good...I can totally see why you chose Bella, and you know, you really can't go wrong with Jasper because he evens everyone one out so well.

Reviewer: AussieECfan (Signed) · Date: January 22, 2010 03:16 AM · On: The Sperm Donor

Wow, Edward Snr is an a**hole! And to kick a woman in the head? I mean, I'm not totally surprised given how he abused Edward's Mum before he killed her but still....

Author's Response:

He's a real douchebag with anger issues.  :(

Reviewer: My Friend Alice (Signed) · Date: January 22, 2010 02:10 AM · On: Breakdown

I'm glad this one was short...I need to get to work! I will have to drive to work with tears in my eyes but I won't be late.

Author's Response:

Sorry about the tearful ride to work, MFA.  :(

Reviewer: My Friend Alice (Signed) · Date: January 21, 2010 06:31 PM · On: Lullabies and Triple Word Scores

It's a toss up between Bella and Alice. See my name: My Friend Alice. She is great and has a huge heart.

Author's Response:

I thought you might pick Alice.  ;)  You're right...she does have a big heart.

Reviewer: My Friend Alice (Signed) · Date: January 21, 2010 05:48 PM · On: The Thief

Edward or Emmett...he is really more my type but how can I not love Edward too.

Great chapter. I just hope that Bella doesn't make Peanut come early by her stress.

Author's Response:

I would have thought you'd choose Jasper.  ;)  I suppose that would be stereotyping, wouldn't it.  ;)

Reviewer: My Friend Alice (Signed) · Date: January 21, 2010 05:09 PM · On: Lazy Day Compromises

First, my well wishes go out to your neighbors. Secondly, Love the chapter!

Author's Response:

Thanks, My Friend Alice!  Glad you liked it.

By the way, just wanted to say that I loved the completed story on FF!  I made sure to read the outtakes where they belonged so that I didn't miss out, and I'll re-read as stuff comes up here.

I'd rate higher if it went higher!

Author's Response:

Thanks, BA.  :)  I'm glad you're getting the full effect.  ;)

Reviewer: Poisonvamp (Signed) · Date: January 21, 2010 04:33 PM · On: The Sperm Donor

OMJ!!! I can't believe Ed Sr. beat the crap outta Edward and kicked Bella in the head! Thank God he didn't kick her in the stomach. I feel ill!!! Wow I'm utterly speechless!!! I know this is not the last we'll hear of Daddy Dearest. I have a sick feeling he's going to make an appearance once Edward and Bella forget about the whole incident. Those poor kids. I think I need to take a few swings at the punching bag to relieve some of the tension that Ed Sr. brought out in me. Thank you for the quick updates, they have been a rough ride but I'm glad to get them over with fast. Kinda like pulling off a band aid. Sorry...still speechless....

Author's Response:

You may not want to read the next chapter if you're feeling so angry/disturbed by Ed Sr. as it's totally from his perspective.  It's a strange one...kind of all over the place.

Reviewer: tracygoodey1 (Signed) · Date: January 21, 2010 07:23 AM · On: The Sperm Donor

ok i was good this time waiting till i got in from work to check for an update  and yippee another chapter is alicesdances01 a vamp? cause she sure is speedy lol, well if there is a queue to join to kick sperm donors arse i want to join,  i'm so cross i could spit, i'm an alcoholic and bipolar what a pile of croc as an excuse, even sat in that coffee shop he was not remorsefull  at all in fact he was outright rude and unsympathetic and a total bastard he should have offered explinations if nothing else, it should not have mattered what edward said and then to attack him in the street not once but three times and then bella is attacked i must tell you my heart went up in my mouth for a minute and i was shouting peanut never mind bella, but as edward says he know now for sure what he is, no question, i'm worried edward felt watched at the airport, im also worried i'm attached and concerned about fictional people (should i be lol?) you write so well you cant help but get sucked in

ps done the haiti thing loads of authors have put up stories/oneshots etc  it should be a great read at the same time doing something good

Author's Response:

Thanks for supporting the Haiti Relief project, tracy.  It's a great cause and I think that we can raise a lot of money, not to mention all the great writing you'll get in return!

Ed Sr. is a train wreck, he's used to making excuses, and he's delusional.  Just wait until you get a chance to spend some time in his head...you'll probably want to kick him more.

Reviewer: RedRedRed (Signed) · Date: January 21, 2010 07:19 AM · On: The Sperm Donor

hey another great chap =] i can believe that heactually kicked them but i guess thats what he is like it will be good to see edwards fathers pov

Author's Response:

Thanks, R3.  I don't know if you'll like Ed Sr.'s POV...it's kind of messed up.

OK, call me slow, but I just discovered that this fic is FINISHED on FF!  Sooo, I'm gonna head on down there to devour the rest of it :-D

I'm all about the instant gratification.

Author's Response:

see below... ;)

Reviewer: BookAddict (Signed) · Date: January 21, 2010 05:28 AM · On: The Sperm Donor

UGH!  Mental illness is no excuse for kicking a pregnant woman in the head.  Clearly, someone needs a whole pile of cognitive therapy and some goooood meds.  PLEASE don't let him come after Bella...  she's gone through way too much already!

Author's Response:

No, it's not an excuse, but it didn't stop him from doing it.  He didn't know she was pregnant, but that doesn't change the fact that kicking people in the head is generally not a good thing to do.

OH!  You're going to miss out on the next chapter if you go to FF.  I put one of the outtakes in next here at Twilighted.  Not only that, the story has been cleaned up, errors fixed, things added, so if you don't mind the unpolished FF version, then please, by all means, read it there.  :)
