Ack! Bad enough that Bella's been all tied up in knots over whether Edward and her brother were all right, but to hear about the death of a school mate "out of the mouths of babes" (so to speak)... Ouch!
But I loved the bit where Edward said he didn't want the Claddagh back until he had "something to replace it with"... It almost sounded like a proposal (just not a formal one). A tender moment in the midst of heartbreak.
Can't wait to read more!
Author's Response: as always there is the ebb and flow; the bitter and the sweet. such is life. pat's death was awful and heartbreaking...smething the group will never fully get over. but there is hope, too, and we see that in edward's around-the-way hint of maybe-marriage... ;) thanks for letting me know what you thought...

Heavy burdens and emotions to bear. At least Edward has Bella to share some of it with and to be enough outside the realm to be an escape of sorts too.
Author's Response: yes, edward certainly has a lot on his plate, doesn't he. while he does prefer to protect bella from some of the realities of his life, he's slowly learning that he can lean on her, as well.

I'm surprised Alice didn't recognise her brother's ring on Bella's finger... unless she chose not to comment on it. I thought it was sweet that he gave it to her, full of promise; but the timing seems a little ominous to me. But I loved the fact that Bella and Rosalie were able to bond over the fact their men were away up to something dangerous.
And Edward spilling on Bella's bed rather than in her is not a guarantee against pregnancy... Sorry, it's the first thought that popped into my head when I read that.
Can't wait to read more!
Author's Response: i think alice notices most everything, but when you've been friends for that long... i don't know, some things just sort of go unsaid. She knows Bella and her brother are together now, and intimate so... it is what it is. i'm glad you enjoyed bella and rose bonding in this chapter; they will continue to do so a little bit in later chapters.
edward spilling on bella's bed was just another way to write a lemon.
it's funny how many comments and questions i've gotten pertaining these two and their birth control methods, or should i say - lack there of.
EDWARD AND BELLA WILL NOT BE HAVING ANY BABIES IN THIS FIC, lol, unless it's like, later on in life. that would convolute an already intense plot, you know? while it's easy to get pregnant, it's also ~not~ easy. it's all about timing. i can't bring myself to write about edward wrapping it up every single time - not only would be unrealistic for the time and place (and culture) in which they were living, it would become clunky and repetitive writing-wise.
anyway, sorry for the ramble. but this seems to be a concern for people, and it's just...not a concern. :)

t fits that Alice and Jasper would go to the peace rallies. And it fits that Bella would want to do IRA work with Edward, and that he wouldn't want her anywhere near it. And it fits that Tanya is a jealous bitch full of sour grapes. But I was surprised that you made Jessica Mike(y)'s sister. That I didn't see coming. His story reminded me a little of In the Name of the Father, too.
In all, lovely chapter! Although I'm wondering if Edward really confessed all he did with Bella and wants to, to the priest. Or if Bella confessed that as well.
Can't wait to read more!
Author's Response: well, i am pleased you can see the logic of most of my characterizations. :) as for jess, i figured - why not let her break free of the mold she's usually put into? and tanya...well...she's conceited and drunk and bitchy, but in my mind even she's not all that awful, deep down. just, jealous. and, you know...liquor talks. :p
oh, edward is definitely the type that would give detailed accounts of his sexcapades with bella (albeit w/out saying her name, you know, to save her a least a little mortification). bella would be a lot more embarrassed and vague, lol.

Author's Response: yes, edward does have a soft interior to complement his tough exterior, doesn't he? he's very loyal and protective of those he loves and cares about; we'll see more of that as the story progresses. he's not irrational, though - after all he was sort of in a similar situation with bella and em, you know? lol...so he gives jasper a chance. :)

You know, I was expecting James to be the ringleader of their little faction (or whatever you call it, I have lethalogica), not Edward. Can I deduce from that little car ride that Alice knows more about the boys activities now?
Oh, and I loved the mutual declarations of love at the end. But if they're Catholic, Edward should not be using a condom. The Pope would not approve! Not that he'd approve of their activities anyway... I know (and agree with) the reasons that condoms are good, but still... they're Catholic! (I'm not, I'm C of E)

Author's Response: No, "faction" makes sense - or brigade.... :) and yeah, a lot of people were expecting james to be the leader. gotcha!
yes,it's true that birth control is a huge no-no for strict Catholics; that's why i specifically didn't put bella on birth control pills (and oh, trust me - people have asked. but that would be unrealistic). anyway, this is now the 70's. things were slightly more lax and...like you said - they're not exactly following all of the rules, know what i mean? additionally, carlisle's a doctor and access to all sorts of...useful things. i'll leave it at that.
i could see someone like mike newton's character not using condoms, maybe he's a little more orthodox and a little less rebellious. edward, on the other hand, has connections... :)
