Since JRParz covered the part about Bella's gift not working on Alice or Jasper's talents, I don't feel the need to address that again (though I will add that Edward is not the only other Cullen - excluding Bella - who is gifted, though, of course, Bella's shield is no more effective against Nessies gift than it is on Alice or Jasper's).

There were a couple other snags that were overlooked, the first being more signfigant than the second).  First, when Bella, Kate, Ness and Edward were working on her shield, Edward describes it as being like a two-way mirror (or glass??? I can't recall which specifically was used in the book).  He says he could hear Nessie's thoughts once he is under the shield, whereas he could not when he was outside of it; yet, he was still able to hear the thoughts of everyone outside of the shield as well.  He then speculates that if Kate tried to shock him when they were both under the shield, she most likely would succeed.

So, basically, if you are within the bubble of her shield, your gift will still work on those both outside as well as inside it (as always, excluding Bella).  For the sake of this one-shot, Bella would have needed to form the bubble around Emmett to keep Edward from hearing his thoughts.  If Bella truly wanted to give Edward a break from hearing everyone else's thoughts for a while, she would need to form something more like a donut shaped shield with Edward being in the center space the shield was not covering. :)

The second snag (a minor one, as I mentioned) is about the amount of strain maintaining her dome shaped shield puts on Bella.  When she is first learning to expand her shield, she finds it heavily taxing - almost akin to being physically exhausted; however, when her rage allows her to throw her shield out to more than cover all the Cullens, the wolves, and their allies/witnesses, she no longer had to strain in order to maintain it nor was she left depleted after shielding such a large area.  The previous effort had been because she was fighting against herself - the part of her mind that demanded defense of self above all clinging tightly to the shield that had protected it so well.  She actually had already been working on getting her shield to fit closely around those on her side because she was worried someone unwanted might slip under it and thought about how it seemed to want to cling to those she was protecting, as if it was drawn to the various sparks of friends & family (I'd say she was managing fairly well, too, given she was actually able to shield Garrett without also covering Kate even when he had his arms locked tightly around her while they struggled on the ground as she fought to get her hands on Caius).

Sorry if this sounds like a gripe - it really isn't intended to be such - I just have a major thing about the details. :/  I do love how Edward was able to win regardless, though. :D

Alright... cute tale, brought a smile to my face, but since nobody pointed it out to you, I thought I'd address these two sentences of yours...

Emmett must have seen my reluctance because he started to beg. “Please Bella, give it a try. Just once I’d like to be able to surprise Alice or Edward when I sneak up on them.”

“Bella, I have to admit it would be nice to have my power blocked off once in a while,” Jasper said quietly. I looked over at him to see a hopeful expression on his face. “Just once I’d like to stand in a crowd of people and only feel my own emotions.”

First, Bella's shield never worked on Alice, remember?  :-)

Second, Bella's shield never worked on Jasper, either.

So, I'm glad you just went with Edward because that is the only Cullen gift Bella can block.  :-)

It was a great idea for a story thread - I would love to read more on Bella's new power, I always felt that was more for her to do.

I wondered about Bella's talent and if she might someday be able to create little shield bubbles for those she wishes to protect. This story was great - very funny. I love when the boys act all boyish with one another. :)

Haha. Very funny, i actually enjoyed it alot. I was confused when Alice started talking about Emmet being not so happy about how things would turn out, but it was a good post-breaking dawn.

thanks for that.
