I'm a new reader, from Mexico. Your story is AMAZIN'. I wanna tell you that the way you described the abuse of James is clearlly so real... Well, at last it does for me. In my family we were victims of intrafamiliar violence, so I could tell that your story does't seem too cliché or predictable. In fact I wanna share with you a Poem, that reminds me of that time in my life when I was a child an watch my mom suffer almost (it was't as terrible as James') the same that Bella. Here it is:

He gave me flowers

I got flowers today. It wasn't my birthday or any other special day. We had our first argument last night and he said a lot of cruel things that really hurt me. I know that he is sorry and didn't mean to say the things he said - because he sent me flowers today.

 

I got flowers today. It wasn't our anniversary or any other special day. Last night he threw me into a wall and then started to choke me. It seemed like a nightmare but you wake up from nightmares to find that they aren't real. I woke up this morning sore and bruised all over. I know he must be sorry - because he sent me flowers today.

 

I got flowers today. And it wasn't Valentines Day or any other special day. Last night he beat me and threatened to kill me. Makeup and long sleeves didn't hide the cuts and bruises this time. I couldn't go to work because I didn't want anyone to know But I know he is sorry - because he sent me flowers today.

 

I got flowers today and it wasn't Mother's Day or any other special day. Last night he beat me again and it was much worse than all the other times. If I leave him what will I do? How will I take care of the kids? What about money? I'm afraid of him and too scared to leave him! But he must be sorry - because he sent me flowers today.

 

I got flowers today. Today was a very special day. It was the day of my funeral. Last night he finally killed me. I was beaten to death. If only I would have gathered enough courage and strength to leave him.

 

So I got flowers today - for the very last time.

I was REALLY disappointed with the way Bella reacted this chapter. Esme and Carlisle litterally went out of their way, Carlisle risked his career, to save Bella's life... and she couldn't even give them the benifit of the doubt. And beyond that... to actually yell at them. I wouldn't care IF someone kept a secret from me... I would never talk that way to someone who, if not for them, I would be dead.

It's kinda like when Bella got mad at Edward after he saved her from Tyler's van in the books. He just saved her life, risked his exposure to save her life... and she was bitching at him as if he owed her something, some sort of explaination. If someone saved my life, I would be kissing their feet, not getting in their face. Lol.

Kinda like how you aren't supposed to verbally harrass police officers. They risk their life for us, so they are afforded a certain amount of respect.

I don't know... maybe that's just me. But I've always been taught not to bite the hand that feeds you. And I know Carisle and Esme aren't currently doing anything for Bella anymore... but the did SO much for her. I think they deserved a little more respect than that. And Edward, poor Edward... hadn't done a single thing to Bella... and she flat out accused him of lying. Lol.

Which is why I really wish Esme and Carlisle had accepted Bella's apology. I find that in a lot of fics though. Bella can jump to conclusions, and say or do something hurtful, she can snap at people under stress... and people rationalize it away for her, make excuses for her, instead of letting her take responsibility for her actions. Even though... in most stories where Edward jumps to some kind of conclusion, and accuses Bella of something hurtful... he never gets that sort of grace period. He always has to beg for forgiveness, and Bella makes a big show of "I've never done anything to deserve that from you". I don't think I have ever read a story where Edward accused Bella of lying or yelled at her... and got away without an apology for it... even in stories where Bella DID do what she is accused for, people review and say Edward had no right to yell at her. I know Bella is A victim... but Carlisle, Esme, and Edward have never victimized her.

But... I still love this story :) I just think women get away with too much stuff now a'days, and that manifests itself into people's Bellas. Women are aloud to yell at, and be hurtful to, and throw dishes at, and slap, and punch men in the name of "emotional vulnerability" anytime their feelings are hurt or they are mad. Where as a man can pretty much get thrown in jail for looking at a woman the wrong way now a'days, and isn't supposed to raise his voice at a lady. Which is kinda messed up considering how hard women have been fighting for equality.

I understand completely where you're coming from, and trust me, I hate that inequality you mentioned about men being practically thrown into jail for looking at a woman the wrong way, while she can basically beat the crap out of a guy and nothing will happen to her.

I'm not letting her get away with it, but try to think of it in her perspective: the fact that Edward and Esme & Carlisle are related is great and all (and she'll appreciate that fact more in the next chapter), but it seems like too much of a coincidence to her.

Remember, she's been through a lot, and people who have been through this sort of ordeal have a difficult time trusting people, even those who have helped them in the past (or are currently helping them, in Esme and Carlisle's case). The next chapter, she'll do some grovelling once she really thinks about what could have happened to Carlisle and Esme, had they been found out.  And Carlisle and Esme didn't accept the apology because they are sympathetic people. I hadn't even thought of that angle! ;-)

Really, though, they should apologize to her because they willingly omitted information from their conversations with her (that their children lived in Forks). IMO, that should have been something they told her right away, to help her make her own decisions about whether to move to Forks or not.

I've never been in this situation before, but I've been told by a few people who have experience with this sort of thing that her reaction was pretty realistic. Thanks for your comments! Hope I helped clear up some reasons why I wrote things the way I did...

I can understand Bella's behavior. I would be like that too, if I had lived the way she did.
