I passed by this story at least 5 times, thinking 'Mike Newton? Nah, it'll be rubbish. Just a recall of everything that's happened, just stretched out unnecessarily.' But then I spotted it again and gave it a go.

It's really good. Refreshing. Gave me a completely different perspective on the entire story. I've read it twice and still want to read it again. You're a really good author to be able to accomplish that in just ONE chapter. Excellent. 10/10.

Author's Response:

Thank you.  I'm really glad you decided to give Mike's story a chance.  When I first started writing fanfiction, I never for a second imagined that I'd be writing a story about Mike Newton either.  I really enjoyed giving him a voice, and I'm glad that you've enjoyed reading his story. x

ooh. you put mike in a whole new light there. and it was my first time reading a second person story and i liked it very much. and i also dont mind mike as much either, most people portray him as a dirty, horny boy with no good thoughts to his name, but you didnt.

xx

Author's Response:

Thank you!  I'm glad you liked it.  One of the bad cliches in fanfic th at always annoyed me was horny-rapist-villainous Mike.  Really, he's not like that at all in the books.  I just wanted to help people remember the real Mike.

Wonderful insight into the mind of Mike Newton: I love your writing style, you wrote it completely in 2nd person which was interesting to read (in a good way).

Author's Response:

Thank you.  I'm glad you liked it.  I loved getting into Mike's head to write this one. :)

I really, really enjoyed reading this. Clever use of POV. The scenes and thought processes you captured were great!

(And props to you for keeping the British spellings and phrases!)

Author's Response:

Thanks!  This story was one of my favourites to write.  Poor Mike has been butchered by the fandom.  I'm glad you liked it! :)

Reviewer: julesames (Signed) · Date: September 02, 2009 04:34 AM · On: In Defence of Mike Newton

Loved it! Loved the second person point of view as well. I know how hard it is to write in that POV and it's so rare!!! Great job! :)

Favourite line: "You thank god that Edward Cullen is just an eighteen year old boy too, and can’t read minds, otherwise you know you’d be in so much trouble right now with Bella’s overprotective boyfriend. No wait- husband. Whatever. You’re a teenage boy. It still sounds insane to you." You're a crack up!! You made me chuckle lots.

Thank you for giving me the insight into Mike Newton's mind, I guess he isn't so much of a creep, is he? :)

Author's Response:

Thank you, for such praise.  I'm blushing like human Bella!

I loved Mike in the books.  It's a shame that he's so often portrayed as the villain in fanfiction. :(

i think it does a bit of justice for mike

Author's Response:

Mike deserves more love, doesn't he? :)

Wow, I am absolutely amazed at your portrayal of Mike. It's really opened my eyes, and is totally canon.

Personally, I hate readinf fics were Mike beats/rapes/cheats on Bella. But I don't mind him getting rejected or something. But this story actually shows what Mike should be represented as.

Jess in this (from Mike's POV) was rather refreshing too. In reality, she's wasn't meant to be evil, but just another teenager.

You have a wonderful out look on things, and are a wonderful author.

British spelling is the right spelling and I don't like the Americanized world. :P Haha.

Anyhoozle, that was a wonderful read.

From Tubby. :-)

Author's Response:

Thank you so much for such a wonderful review.

I guess I just got sick of reading yet another fic in which Mike rapes Bella, screws the entire student body and then ends up drinking himself to an early grave.  Mike in the books is actually a pretty sweet kid.  He's far from perfect, and so is Jess, but they're regular teenagers and I'm glad you thought I managed to convey that.

Glad you liked,

Subtly x

I really liked this, but I have just one question... Isn't Edward's middle name Masen? That's what I remember... Again, though, great job!!

Author's Response:

Thanks again!  I love Mike.

A lot of people give Edward the name Edward Anthony Masen-Cullen, because Masen was his human surname... but for security reasons, regarding all the fake IDs the Cullens get through, I think that the Cullen kids would just have one surname.

And Stephenie revealed that Edward's middle name is Anthony in her correspondence with the Lexicon ;)

This was a lot of fun.  I loved the way you went through his mental processes, and I loved how Mike and Jess were able to find love with each other, flaws and all.  Because honestly... aren't we all flawed?  Great job!

Author's Response:

Thanks!  I love Mike.  I actually love all of the humans - Jessica included.  She's bitchy and gossipy, but she's normal.  So much of Twilight is unrealistic, and that's good, because it's not supposed to be centered in reality.  But it's also good to see brief glimpses of reality around Bella's life.  I'm glad you liked it! :)

I have to admit I picked to read this story because it was on TLYDF. I have gotten into the habit of reading the stories that are up there and I have loved every single one so far. I normally wouldn't have read a story about Mike Newton but really it was very well writen and it was very refreshing to read an outside point of view on the whole Edward/Bella. Very well writen. I can't wait to read other stories from you in the future.

Author's Response:

Thanks for the review!

I'm still so shocked that it was mentioned on TLYDF - I expected this story to crash and burn, because let's face it, no one cares about Mike.  I love to write about the humans, but my human fics never get as much attention as my Edward fics!

I'm glad you liked it.  I had so much fun writing about Mike.  He's a good guy, really.  Not perfect, just normal. :)

Reviewer: kapers_in_pink (Signed) · Date: April 03, 2009 11:31 PM · On: In Defence of Mike Newton

Oh I absolutely loved this.  People usually use Mike as a literary punching bag, but you wrote him as a real person, and not just comedic relief.

I love the little bit of Mike/Jess too, because I agree, they are absolutely perfect for each other.

Author's Response:

Thanks!

I agree, Mike is treated terribly in fanfiction.  And sure, he's got flaws, but no one can expect him to be as perfect as Edward, can they?  Everyone would like to think they'd swoon over Edward if they saw him, but chances are, they'd run away screaming.  Mike is the kind of boy that people end up with, not Edward.

Again, thanks for reviewing.  I'm glad you liked the story! x

omg!! poor mike!

its quite good because when we read the novels he comes across as quite shallow and pathetic. but u made him sound real and deep

GOOD JOB

and happy bday! (although it was ages ago)

Author's Response:

Thanks!  When we read the novels, we only see him from Bella's perspective, and even then, she doesn't really see him very well.  Mike is shallow, but definately not pathetic, and I'm glad you thought my fic showed that. x

This was amazingly well written - a wonderful change from horndog, rude prick Mike.

Also, I never picked up on the spelling - I think it's cause I'm Aussie, and I hate American spelling.

Nice work :)

Author's Response:

Thanks!  I read a few too many rapist!Mike stories and decided that something had to be done.  I actually really liked Mike in the books.  He was a cool guy. :)

k, I read cuz of the blog - and I loved. I really liked the way Meyer did the Jacob piece on her website - and you, -clever, you- were very deft in your use of it here. I loved this!

Author's Response:

Thanks!  I'm halfway through The Nymph and the Waterfall (and loving it by the way), so to get such a great review from you is just amazing. :)

that was interesting, ive never thought of mike that way. I still think he is kinda weird, but what boy isn't? But I thought this was a great story! and happy birthday! even thought its like REALLY late! :)

Author's Response:

Thanks!

Heh, yeah, I should really take the birthday thing off... it is a little out-of-date now... :)

I absolutely adoe secon-person ficlets first. Second, this was wonderful and the rec Rialle did on you did not disappoint. I found this absolutely wonderful and really -- I SAW in Newton's head for the first tie. Inspiration! SM could have used this for character development ;D. THANK YOU!

Author's Response:

Thank you!  I've never used second person before until this one, but I really loved writing it here.  And I love writing about the humans because I always feel like they never got the attention they deserved in canon.  Glad you liked it! x

Reviewer: Kyrene (Signed) · Date: February 24, 2009 04:13 AM · On: In Defence of Mike Newton

Absolutely perfect. In the books Bella makes him out to be an annoying puppy dog and Edward makes him out to be some sexual deviant, when in truth, he's just a normal teenage boy. I totally would've gone for that if I'd gone to Forks (in the end we all need to come to terms with the fact that Edward would have freaked most of us out, lol). To Mike this is normal High School life in a boring town. Done wonderfully.

Author's Response:

Thanks!  In the books, Mike was one of the only humans I liked.  He was great for comedy- the perfect average guy in a story about mythical creatures.  Bella and Edward are prejudiced in their views of him- Edward's irrationally jealous of his teenage fantasies and Bella's not interested in him, so she sees his advances as annoying.

And yes, I think the majority of us would have turned and run from Edward! :)

Oh so cute! I think I might even like Mike a little bit more again! Great Story!

Author's Response:

Thanks!  Glad I could convert you.  Mike needs more love ;)

I so glad I read this! Ever since I started reading Twilight fanfic I've always been surprised at how Mike is protrayed. In the books, I always just saw him as a typical, ordinary, kinda shallow, but overall nice teenage boy and that really came accross here. It's refreshing not seeing Mike painted as a complete asshole jock type. I like how you explained how he got together with Jessica and started realizing that he doesn't really know Bella, that it's just an infatuation. I loved the comment at the end about how he's glad Edward can't read minds.

You're a very good writer. I really enjoyed reading this :)

Author's Response:

Thanks for the review and rating!  I always thought Mike's depiction in fanfic was a bit too harsh- I mean, sure, he might be a bit pervy, but he's supposed to be!  He's a teenage boy!  As teenage boys go, he's one of the nicer ones, and I'm glad you thought I managed to convey that here.  And I just couldn't resist adding that line ;)

Nice insight into Mike's character. When you compare him to Edward you realize that Mike is really just a typical teen-ager and a product of his generation, just as Edward is a product of his time period.

Author's Response:

Thanks!  And yes, that's exactly what I was trying to get across.  Mike is a completely ordinary teenage guy- and a pretty decent one at that, compared to some of the teenage guys around today! x

Aw, Mike is too darn cute!

I really enjoyed reading that. Everyone knows how hard a time Mike is given, and you cut him some slack. It's only fair, he' not a bad guy. I like the conclusion of it, Mike seems like he'd be the type to just be happy with comfort. He's not settling or anything, he's just normal. The way it was written, the whole "you are... you know..." etc I found... different to read, at first. As I read on though, I got used to it and thought it was done really well.

Thanks for giving us a little insight into Mike's head.

Author's Response:

Thanks for the glowing review!  I don't usually write second person, and I don't usually read it either, but I felt that to give Mike the defence he deserved, I'd have to put the readers directly into his place.  And that meant second person would have the maximum impact when reading the story.

Again, I'm glad you liked it, and thanks for reviewing! x
