The Edward in my story is only a couple years older than the man the story was based on (John Betar). It is not out of the realm of possibility for them to still be alive at that age. Rare, yes; impossible, no. And the Betars were married in the 1930s, yet are still alive to celebrate their wedding anniversary. I didn't want to write a period piece, though, so Edward and Bella were married in current time, meaning their 81st wedding anniversary is 81 years into the future. Imagine what kind of medical advancements could be made in that timeframe. Reaching 100 years old may not be quite as unusual as it is now.
