If you wrote hardcore BDSM, I'd definitely be worried

I do not even know what BDSM is so I don't think I could be writing it LOL. Hmm, I think there is a slim chance that I will not be ready for it when I finally do have teenagers.

Lol, you'll hang in there. The most important thing to remember is to be there and be willing to be open with them. Teenagers like to be independant and they'll get mad if you don't let them to some degree, but they also need that parental ear when they need advice (and parental scolding when they need it on more than one occasion, lol). It's a tough balance. I still don't know how my mother survived my teen years. Yeesh. Lol.

And BDSM is stuff like The Submissive/Dominant (though that was really soft compared to a lot out there), where one person has complete control over another person and pain is mixed with pleasure, most often in sexual ways.

I only discovered fanfic recently and I'm 18 so I didn't have to lie about my age but I have to admit if I'd discovered it as a tween I would so have lied about my age.

To be honest, some people in my class watched porn on their phone in a lesson a few years ago (this was year 10/11 (I can't remember) so they'd have been about 15). So yeah, reading smutty fanfiction is most defiently not the most worrying things underage teens are doing on the Internet, so I wouldn't worry to much about polluting our young minds. (Well, their young minds. Most remember I actually count as an adult now ;) ).

sigh, absolutely guilty.
coming from a teen, (about a month shy of 17.) I must say that there really is no way to stop teens and tweens from reading NC-17. In fact, compared to the stuff they heard (and some do) in high school, I think that fanfic smut is actually a lot healthier. :rotfl:

I don't believe it contributes to delusions of grandeur when it comes to sex, I have found myself often times snorting, rolling my eyes at the overly romanticised smut that seems to be in just about every good Twilight fic out there.

One thing's for sure, when my time comes, I won't be able to help all the lovely, sexy images that come to mind from reading these stories, and finally coming to the conclusion: well, this sucks.

It is in local bookstores and libraries, and has been read by young teens forever in a day. I've always been amused that bookstores/libraries have no rating systems, considering how nearly every other form of media does. Not that ratings do much.

Just sayin'...it's unavoidable, really. If a teen wants to read/see/etc., he or she will. They don't even need to have the internet to find "naughty" things. lol

I didn't have the internet until I was 16 (all the way back in the 90's) and I was almost 17 when I found fanfic... but I'm pretty sure I read my first erotic fiction at about 13 or 14 (I think it was along the lines of a Mills and Boon novel). At 14, my friends and I were also reading magazines that featured articles about sex, short erotic fiction stories, and even featured a 'position of the week' (complete with a review of the position by a couple)!

I'm not a mum, but to be honest, I've never really thought about the age of my readers before (I've been writing in a different fandom for 5 years now - just started reading Twilight fic a few months ago)... it doesn't bother me if they are teenagers or not. After all, a lot of kids in my school were having sex by age 14 or 15 anyway (the age of consent in the UK is 16 and about 30% of UK teenagers lose their virginity before they turn 16).

There is no stopping it. Can you imagine if all the actors and actresses of the world got up in arms about tweens and teens watching their movies.

If kids are reading your fic, chances are it's hella tame compared to what they've probably already seen. I remember being 16 and reading a book in an English class that I bought thinking it was just a good mystery book but it had some pretty graphic like erotic scenes. Of course by that time between mom, health class, magazines (Teen People and Cosmo anyone?) and VERY graphic pencil drawings in middle school textbooks (you'd be surprised) it didn't shock me. Of course fan fics DO make oral sex much more abundant but still...

I'm almost nineteen now and I've been reading Twilight fanfiction for about a year and a half now but before that I was reading Harry Potter fanfiction and I didn't seek out smut but it was there. I don't think it's that big of deal just because I think it's better for teens to be reading it then practicing it and in high schools today a lot of the required reading has sex in it. In my junior english class we read For Whom the Bell Tolls (which has sex in it) and A Light in August (where there is a scene where a child witnesses sex). It is also very common for there to be sex in teen fiction now as well.

Someone in an earlier post mentioned that the library should have a better rating system or something along those lines and I work at a library (and have for about 7 years). The library is a no sensor zone and even though things are split into teen fiction and adult fiction a lot of the reason they don't put a romance/erotica section is because it would attract to the section more than it would make people turn away from it. The second you tell someone they aren't aloud to do something they will eagerly jump into it.

I would just continue writing and try not think about it, as there really is no way to stop it.

One option I've seen some authors on other sites explore is to have a PG-13 and NC-17 version of chapters in question, and have the NC-17 fic only be available by email or pm. The idea is that an older reader is more comfortable approaching the author in private, especially if the author is going to ask them again about their age. Then again, there's never any guarantee. It's just something that makes some authors more comfortable.

Considering that Twilight is a young adult novel aimed at teenagers I would imagine that there is more than one teen reading your fan fiction. Speaking as someone who was once that teenager I can assure you that your fan fiction is probably not the worst thing on the interweb she has read. You have to learn to accept that young girls are going to read your fan fiction, and it is not going to radically alter their lives. There is no amount of censoring that is going to stop a teenager from reading your story. I'm sure there was a time where many of us lied about our ages on the interweb, so that we could on certain websites, and read certain material.

I started reading smut in fan fan fiction when I was a tween, which is probably the reason I could care less about it now. Once the intrigue of sex was taken away I didn't really find any great need to seek it out, and I also learned that a story that has sex just for the sake of having sex probably wasn't a story I really wanted to read anyway. I, obviously can't speak for everyone, but I'm sure their are others out there who feel the same way

i am also guilty of reading fanfics as a teenager... although technically seeing as i was considered old enough to have sex i didnt see what the problem with me reading about it was.

but i know my mum was little worried when she found out what i was reading. but i think it depends entirely on the girl and their individual level of maturity...

So glad I came across this thread. I just got a review from a girl who said she was 15 and was wondering if I should report it or something...I, too, read smut (for me it was romance novels) when I was a teen. Anyone noticing a trend here? We're all pervs! :hyper:
