To Lemon or Not to Lemon....

What about Admiral Fic? Captain Fic?

To Lemon or Not to Lemon....

Okay, I thought I'd just ask this here....

So....lemons....how do you'll feel about writing them lemons?

Are they fun to write? Or do they give you hives?

I mentioned this on another thread.

They sorta give me hives for several reasons, I'll state them here:

1) Bella and Edward have been worked out sexually in almost every possible respect in fanfictionland, to the point where I feel like it's almost cliched to write a sexual setup--cause it's been done like a million times before. I mean, man....these two kids have done more things in fanfiction land than jenna jameson if you ask me! They must be so exhausted.....

2) Lemons are tricky. You get too graphic, it sounds more like a gynelogical exam than a sexual encounter. You get not graphic enough, it's...not a lemon.

3) Sex is sorta goofy and funny when you try to chronicle it. How many people have made sex tapes-only to realize how goofy they look on video? It's sorta how writing a lemon is at times. It's tricky---getting it right.

4) Sex can be the downfall of good fanfiction story. Why? Cause alot of times it redirects the focus of the story. Once bella and edward "get it on," it can ultimately change the dynamics of the story. And bella and edward in many ways are tied to built-up tension I think. Just like in real life, in fanfictionland, sex changes everything.

Okay, I'm done...just had ask if any other writers worry when and how to approach the lemon in their story to make sure it "works"--not just in terms of it being a good scene, but works in terms of story progression, etc. Especially a bella/edward union--something all of us crave since the series won't give it to us(lol), and yet once you get it in ffland, sometimes it takes away the essence of what makes bedward so hot-denial in the face of extreme desire...

edit: and if you aren't writing ff but reading them, feel free to answer too-I'm curious about everyone's ideas on the subject.

I am not a writer.. but I really do love the sexual tension between Bella and Edward and all the couples.. I prefer it more towards the end and part of the conflict. Sexual tension makes for hilarious story lines too.

As in the case of B&B with the sequel, is a perfect example. Towards the end for the original story and so far, withholding it later in the sequel.

I do like lemons.. but I don't like it to be given up too soon without a really strong storyline. Really strong characters can withhold "giving it up" early, but in my little opinion, I like the build-up. :)

Lemonade served. :)

the first time I wrote some smut I was totally red and flushed. My husband was like "what is wrong with you." It was one of the hardest things to do!!

I, however don't think that I could ever do B&E smuth. I stick to Emmett and ROse or Alice and Jasper. I just think that good B&E smut needs to be sweet and lovely. WIth the two of them, when you start using some of the "words" it just goes very wrong!

Rose and Emmett have hot and heavy smut!! They are fun because they will do it anywhere anytime!!

AO and I set out to write semi-clean smut! I know sounds silly, but we tried not to use the "words". However there are only so many ways to say them without being graphic!! Trust me I know.

All of that being said, I am proud of what I have written and when it gets to the point that I feel like I need to hide it from my husband, that will be when I have gone too far!

Some people are really good at writing smut. What I mean by that is the scene turns out to be romantic instead of sleazy. I finish reading and go "awwww" instead of "ewwww." PF and B&B are just two examples of the romantic, awwww stuff.

I finally got to a point in SCP where I had to write my first lemon. (Teaser, guys!) I actually texted my friend who is slaving over schoolwork to finish her master's degree next month because I was so nervous. Thankfully, she took time to calm me down. I'm guessing it turned out OK. All I can say, though, is that the lemon is in keeping with the rest of the craziness of SCP! I don't know if I can do it again!

interesting responses so far. Thanks!

Yeah, circumstances in the actual fanfic totally dictate how to go about it. I think if you end up doing a human/au story, it is bound to come up and will most likely be a big part of the story, simply cause humans.....have sex alot of the times...lol Age factors in as well.

The thing I think that is missing most from fanfiction stories generally when it comes to lemons is that sex doesn't necessarily equal sensuality.

I think sensuality is actually in short supply for the most part, and that's what actually what makes Bella and Edward's relationship so compelling. (well, of course I don't mean any of the fine ladies here and all cause there's alot of great writers actually on this site, but generally).

Bella and Edward to me for the most part are total poster children for foreplay in all forms-in language, in gestures, in physicality, in denial of that physicality, even though the desire is there obviously. I tend to think the best ffs are the ones that play on this dynamic to the fullest extent before lunging into lemonland. And like spotzle said as well-not making every chapter about a new position from then on...lol (chapter 104: Bella goes reverse cowboy in Yosemite outside their tent in very close proximity to nearby campers while Edward wears a bear suit....)

I actually had to talk AO down one day after we got a review that REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted B&E to go at it. She called and said I think I'm going to have them sleep together...

I said, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!"

We had the exact circumstances planned out for a very long time and I wanted to keep to our plan. That is why we had a lot of Emmett and Rose and Alcie and Jasper smut. It kept everyone at bay. But we intentionally didn't put smut in every single chapter. I think in the chapter where they all go out for Pizza (seriously I don't remember what chapter that was.) we hinted at Rose and Emmett and gave a little foreplay, but no one did anything! I think that the foreplay can be as good (actually to write better) than the actualy thing!!

Stick to what you plan and write it how best works for you. That is the best advice about lemons.

This is an interesting topic, I'm enjoying hearing everyone's opinion as a reader of fanfic. I thought about this book as soon as I read halo's post and thought you guys might be interested.

The Joy of Writing Sex, Elizabeth Benedict

I bought it as part of my college creative writing courses. I still refer to it from time to time, but I'm really still building up my nerves to actually write something "lemony."

Writing lemons make me nervous as a cat. I've only written one and it took me twice as long to finish that chapter than any of the others. I don't THINK I'm a Prudie McPrude and goodness knows I read enough smut (thanks to the Brotherhood), but there was something really difficult about writing it. My story, my words, my persepective - it made me feel very vulnerable. Adding lemons gratuitously doesn't make any sense to these characters or to the story - but I am writing about adult relationships and it drips with angst, want and need so it has to be a little tart.

Lemons are tough!

I really struggle writing them... LOVE reading them! especially when they're written by the great JR Ward!

The only thing I am absolutely sure of when it comes to lemons is this... If you're not old enough to be having it, you should NOT be attempting to write it. An author's note that reads "no sexual experience, sorry" doesn't cut it.

*steps down off soapbox*

That is all :ooolala:

Interesting topic...I can't comment on writing the lemon because I am not a writer. I am however, an avid reader. I fully enjoy the lemons, when done well. I think you have to go with what you are comfortable with reading/writing. I admit that I love smut much more than sweet fluff. I LIKE 'the words'. I like different scenarios/positions and when the characters let loose, things that a lot of people probably wouldn't be comfortable with. Case in point, I love the E/B/C threesomes that a certain author posts over on FF.
However, if you don't write the characters well to begin with then it doesn't matter what kind of lemon you write- it's not going to be good either. It shouldn't be about shocking your reader, in my opinion. It should be an extension of the character and story.
The characters don't have to be mirror images of Stephenie's Edward and Bella, but at least give them depth and soul so that I care about them. That makes me really enjoy the lemon- otherwise how is it any different than reading a porn novel?
There are several authors and stories I could list, some right here on Twilighted, in which the author is miraculously able to walk that fine line between XXX and fluff. Those are my favorites! But I understand that for many, less is more.
Of course, this would all be a moot point if I was actually in a relationship and not having to live vicariously and get my frustrations out through the characters!
