He distracts her from her thoughts with his gorgeous presence. They grow close in a very short time, but what will Bella do when she finds out Edward's humiliating secret? What will Jake do when Bella insists on leaving him?

She soon enough becomes acquainted with the inmates there, but how will she cope with the strains of trying to fix severely damaged people? Especially since she may need fixing herself? What challenges will she face? And perhaps most importantly, how will she make the involuntarily committed seem free?

"They're all here for the same reason, essentially," Jasper says, smoothing down his shirt. "The levels go up depending on the severity of the disorder of the patients." He pauses. "Level four patients are those who are considered a vital threat to the lives of people around them, or their own." His eyes catch hers, his blue deep and meaningful. "They aren't here on their own will."

It dawns on Bella. And she knows what he's going to say before he does. "So they're . . . " she starts.

He nods. "Involuntarily committed."

Warning: This is an Edward/Bella fic, but the first several chapters happen before they meet, laying background and developing their characters into what they were at the time of the one-shot. Please be patient - I'm doing my best to make it worth the wait.

Mass executioner is no job for an empath. As the decades passed, Jasper's duties as part of Maria's army wore him down. Briefly revived when he left her to live as a nomad with Peter and Charlotte, he soon left them, too, and his melancholy grew. Then, when he least expected it, a spark in the form of a tiny dark-haired vampire changed his life. Rated M for violence, references to sex and adult themes (but no lemons).
