Competitive shooter Bella Swan had an Olympic gold medal and dreams of another before witnessing the brutal murder of both her parents.  Now living under a new identity as a high school student in tiny Forks, Washington, she must learn to cope with  the loss of both her family and her future.  When she meets the local math teacher and her older "foster-brother", Edward Cullen, things are complicated by an instant and unexpected attraction.

Existence was hard, harder than I would have believed even a few years earlier. Being involved with Bella opened my world to things I wouldn’t have thought about before. Being human was far more difficult than I’d given them credit for, knowing now how wrong I truly was. And even after all of this… I wouldn’t change one thing.

Having her was the most important thing, and anything that came with that I would deal with. As long as she was with me, we’d be all right. Together we could conquer all. She was my existence now, and I couldn’t wait to exist.

Some would do anything for their heart’s desire. Bend the laws of physics, live a lie, defy their family, even sacrifice their mate. In their minds, the end justifies the means. But, in the aftermath, more than one life could be shattered. AU Edward/Bella; Marcus/Elena.

The hybrid continued to advance on her, forcing her higher up the mountain. He was taunting her. She knew he could kill her whenever he pleased, but he just smiled, his perfect white teeth gleaming against his smooth, tanned skin.

She felt movement beneath her. It was subtle at first; then there was another. Her body shook as the earth moved.

Then she heard it.

It was a loud roar, like the sound of a 747 jumbo jet. The mountain trembled with such force she could barely keep herself upright. She turned and her jaw dropped as a huge dark cloud plumed from the mountain. She arched her neck, taking in the massive height of the ominous cloud. She stood transfixed, feeling both fear and awe as she watched light and smoke dancing in the sky.

Hot air slammed against her face, causing her to inhale sharply, the blinding heat scorching her lungs. She willed herself to move, to run far away from the danger that loomed in front of her. Before she could, there was a loud whistle and she saw it coming –fiery rock hurtling toward her. She ducked just in time.

Behind her, the hybrid shrieked, and she spun around. She crouched, ready to defend herself when she saw him combust, on fire, and his body quickly turning to ash.
